From Key West to Jacksonville, Orlando, Tampa, Pensacola and in every community throughout the Sunshine State, there are athletes who can elevate their teams, and they come in every class.
Today, we check in on the areas around St. Petersburg to see a few emerging stars who are certainly not getting the spotlight that they deserve.
These athletes are versatile, tremendous in the classroom – and in some cases – very young.
2022 – Jamon Garrett, LB/FB, St. Petersburg Gibbs. Yet another one of these versatile football players who steps up and makes plays no matter where you put him. This young man not only leads by example on the football field, but is also a tremendous student in the classroom – with a 3.3 GPA. A sure tackler who is not afraid to stick his head in there and block or make a key play on special teams. This is why coaches love to have prospects like this on their team. Athletes who will do things and never question you.

2022 – Garrett Gurney, Athlete, Largo. Talk about a classic throwback player. This young man is everywhere. On pass coverage, run support or just someone who needs to get you that tough yard, this is your guy. Quarterback, fullback, linebacker and the heart and soul of this football team. Every program needs a player like this who will help you win games on both sides of the ball.

2021 – Derrick McClendon, RB/Slot, Dunedin. A versatile offensive weapon who can do so much for this program – as a runner or a pass catcher. This is a tough young man who does not go down on the first hit, is strong and powerful and will run away from you. If you hit him high, he will carry you. Creates a mismatch when he’s in space because of his speed and skill.

2021 – Andre Moore, OT, Gulfport Boca Ciega. Once this talented big man gets his body into the defense, great things happen. He helps to open holes and will not stop until the whistle blows. He’s certainly a gamer who will sustain his block and has become a much better pass blocker as well. This should be a huge year for him – and that will only enhance what he has already established.

2022 – Joey Shane, NG/OC, Clearwater Countryside. This is one of those prospects who has gotten off to a tremendous start – by showcasing his skills on both sides of the ball. While he does have things to learn, you figure that all he’s had was a sophomore season – without spring or summer, so you figure that maturity, competition and a solid work ethic, this is going to be someone to keep an eye on. It will be fun to watch how he grows over the next two years.
