After a few games kicked off the 2020 season last Friday night with Week 0, we officially had Week 1 and the true start to the high school campaign in Iowa.
Fans around the state were treated to some instant classics and incredible performances, and we’ll try to recap it all right here each and every week.
<strong>Dodgers Win Scorefest Over Ames</strong>
Fort Dodge lost quite a bit to graduation last year, but under first-year head coach - and former FDSH and Iowa State standout - Nik Moser, the offense appears to be in midseason form.
Dayson Clayton ran for 325 yards, caught a 59-yard pass and found his way to the end zone six times as the Dodgers topped Ames, 81-54.
Fort Dodge scored 43 points in the second quarter and 22 more in the third.
Carson Peterson threw for 253 yards, completing 9 of 12 passes in his first varsity start. Tyler Schreier caught six balls for 150 yards with three total TDs and [player_tooltip player_id="23876" first="Sam" last="Daniel"] scored on a kickoff return, a rush attempt and picked ff two passes with an onside kick recovery.
All of that was met by Tamin Lipsey of Ames.
One of the top basketball recruits in the nation, Lipsey made his first career start at quarterback after coming back from a serious knee injury. He threw for 369 yards, ran for 210 more and had all eight of the TDs for the Little Cyclones.

<strong>Ankeny City Battle Goes To Hawks</strong>
They might have been forced to play without one weapon, but Ankeny showed they are ready to challenge for the Class 4A title in a 48-6 victory over city-rival Ankeny Centennial.
[player_tooltip player_id="23828" first="Jase" last="Bauer"] threw for 213 yards and four touchdowns, completing 11 of 14 passes. He hit Kade Somers three times for 119 yards and two scores, with University of Iowa recruit [player_tooltip player_id="23810" first="Brody" last="Brecht"] catching three passes for 55 yards and a pair of TDs.
On the ground, Ankeny racked up 219 yards, with 160 coming from [player_tooltip player_id="23967" first="Colin" last="Kadolph"]. The junior also scored three times and caught two passes.
The Hawk defense registered four sacks, 11.5 tackles for loss, recovered three fumbles and held the Jaguars to just 95 yards rushing and 72 yards passing.
<strong>Washington Stuns Bettendorf</strong>
In a defensive battle, Washington earned a big-time Week 1 victory, stunning Bettendorf 19-10.
Trashaun Willis threw for 78 yards and both Wyatt Stout and Wilx Witthoft scored touchdowns. Washington had under 100 yards of total offense, but it was enough for the victory in this one as the defense made five sacks, 11 tackles for loss and picked off three passes.
Willis returned one of those interceptions back for a touchdown as Zayne Lewis recorded two sacks.
<strong><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-31542" src="https://prephoops-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com/redzone/uploads/2020/07/CO-Jake-Rubley-200x300.jpg" alt="" width="200" height="300" /></strong>
<strong>Rubley, Valley Turn Back Roughrider Upset Bid</strong>
West Des Moines Valley is the pick by many to win it all in Class 4A, and with [player_tooltip player_id="22519" first="Jake" last="Rubley"] leading the offense, it is easy to see why.
Rubley completed 11 of 24 for 146 yards with three total touchdowns in a 40-20 victory over Des Moines Roosevelt. The Kansas State commit transferred this summer from Colorado to play in Iowa.
[player_tooltip player_id="23814" first="Jayden" last="Williams"] ran for 113 yards and scored twice with Cael Nesheim catching five passes for 106 yards and a score.
For the Roughriders, [player_tooltip player_id="23832" first="Jaden" last="Koger"] ran for 135 yards and produced a pair of touchdowns. [player_tooltip player_id="24030" first="Jamison" last="Patton"], just a sophomore, completed 18 of 35 for 210 yards with a passing TD and a rushing score.
<strong>Alex Tiernan Makes St. Edmond History</strong>
For the first time in St. Edmond football history, a girl contributed to the scoring total.
Alex Tiernan kicked in the final extra-point during a 61-16 victory over Eagle Grove. It was the first time a girl has scored in a varsity football game for the program.
Tiernan also made an extra-point during a junior varsity game last season for the Gaels. That contest also took place in Eagle Grove against the Eagles.
<strong>Dejean, OABCIG Clicking On All Cylinders</strong>
Cooper Dejean, who led OABCIG to the state title a year ago, picked right up where he left off.
The University of Iowa commit threw for 379 yards and three touchdowns in a 42-0 victory over Ridge View. He also ran for 56 yards and three more scores while recording a handful of tackles on defense.
Trust Wells caught 10 passes for 133 yards and Griffin Diersen caught three balls for 100 yards and two TDs.
<strong>Give These Guys The Day Off</strong>
The term workhorse is used a little less these days as teams prefer to spread the ball around and spread out the offense.
However, you still have those performances that scream "man, give that guy the day off."
Independence junior Marcus Beatty ran 30 times for 248 yards with three touchdowns, adding 7.5 tackles on defense as his team earned a win over Center Point-Urbana.
Gage Voshell of Oelwein racked up 34 carries for 258 yards with a TD, making three stops on defense.
[player_tooltip player_id="23841" first="Ryan" last="Ostrich"] from Cedar Falls recorded 265 yards on the ground with three TDs, while Cedar Rapids Kennedy quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="23839" first="Max" last="White"] ran for 236 yards, threw for 83 and had four touchdowns.
<strong>Punting Matters</strong>
Carroll senior Ty Nissen helped his team earn a 7-0 victory over Bondurant-Farrar with his leg.
Nissen attempted eight punts on the night, averaging over 49 yards per kick. He racked up 395 yards on those kicks, pinning Bondurant-Farrar deep on several instances.
Nissen also made seven tackles, with 5.5 of those coming for loss.
<strong>Little Saturday Afternoon Action</strong>
In a game moved to Saturday, Montezuma rode [player_tooltip player_id="23965" first="Eddie" last="Burgess"] to a 39-38 victory over Kingsley-Pierson.
Burgess, also a standout on the basketball court, completed 18 of 38 for 307 yards with six total touchdowns. He ran for 109 yards and found much success with Trey Shearer in the passing game.
Like Burgess, Shearer, who is committed to Truman State to play basketball, caught 13 passes for 171 yards and two scores.
