Camp Stories: Thunderbirds Looking to Cruise Into 5A Playoffs
At one point it looked like the high school football season was on the brink. However, after the Kansas High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) executive board voted down a proposal, 5-4, that would have moved back the start date, many schools will have team camps during one of the next two weeks.
One of those schools that started its team camp in Football was Shawnee Heights. The Class 5A Thunderbirds will begin practice on August 17 and will open the season on September 4, with a home game against Leavenworth.
Here is a preview of members of the Thunderbird class of 2021 looking for a winning season and college football offers.
<strong>WR, [player_tooltip player_id="35467" first="Brayden" last="Zirkle"], 5'11”, 170, (Ranked No. 127)</strong> – Zirkle made the KS Prep Redzone initial rankings for the top players in the Class of 2021. He plays in an offense that likes to throw the football. He has good hands, is a solid route runner, and is not afraid to go over the middle. He finished the 2019 season with six touchdowns and more than 700 yards receiving.
<strong>DE, Ziwaun White, 5'10”, 215 </strong>– White knows how to make tackles and understands the responsibilities of a defensive end. He rarely overruns a play or looses outside leverage. At 5'10” he plays low to the ground and could be moved to defensive tackle at the next level.
<strong>DL, Caleb Appel, 5'9”, 195</strong> – Appel has been leaned on in the Shawnee Heights program playing 65 games heading into his senior season. He also plays center and is a quality long snapper.
<strong>DB, Jacob Myers, 5'10”, 150</strong> – Myers plays free safety but has the skills to play multiple positions in the defensive backfield. He runs a 4.6 forty and has a 3.2 GPA.
Other seniors to watch on the Shawnee Heights roster include ATH, Hunter Wohler; K, Manuel Salamanca; WR, Aidan Hicks; and DB, Isiah Johnson.
