The New Mexico Activities Association (NMAA) has officially shifted the 2020 high school football season to the spring, and Monday night the governor of New Mexico ordered all summer workouts for fall sports to halt immediately. Nonetheless, we’re plowing ahead with our coverage. Today we look at the top five quarterbacks in Class 6A:
[player_tooltip player_id="26155" first="Chance" last="Harris"], Clovis: Was there really any question or argument concerning who the top 6A quarterback should be? Not really. Harris is going into his third season as the starter for Clovis and has already committed to Colorado State, so he has FBS football in his future. Harris, a major component of arguably the state’s top offensive backfield, could leave on a high note if he leads the Wildcats to their first state title in two decades.
[player_tooltip player_id="26185" first="Jeff" last="Davison"], Cleveland: While beating out Harris for the No. 1 spot would always have been difficult, Davison might have a better claim to the top spot had he stayed healthy last season. Instead, he appeared in only six games. But he returned in time for the playoffs and led the Storm to the 6A state championship, making him the easy choice for No. 2 on our list. Nobody should be shocked if Davison and Cleveland win back-to-back state titles next spring.
[player_tooltip player_id="26160" first="Marcos" last="Lopez"], Las Cruces: Arguably the top player in Las Cruces, Lopez is also one of the most dynamic players in the entire state. Like Harris, he is going into his third season as the Bulldawgs’ starting QB. Last season he threw for 1,874 yards and accounted for 23 total touchdowns to lead the Bulldawgs to an undefeated District 6A-3 record and a spot in the Class 6A playoff quarterfinals.
[player_tooltip player_id="26211" first="Jarren" last="Lewis"], Hobbs: His team went just 2-8 last season, so few people around the state paid attention to what Lewis was accomplishing in the far southeastern corner of the state. As a junior, Lewis threw for nearly 2,000 yards and completed 55 percent of his passes for 18 touchdowns. Unfortunately Hobbs struggled to run the football and defensively surrendered 36+ points six times. Mark Hobbs down as a leading candidate for breakout player of the year in the state.
Aden Chavez, Cibola: Just a rising sophomore, Chavez emerged last season as one of the top young players in the state. After throwing for nearly 1,500 yards and 13 touchdowns last season, Chavez will only get better. This kid is dynamic and fun to watch play.
