As players prepare for the 2020 season, several high-level players have yet to receive much recruiting interest. These are the best defensive lineman in the 2021 class without a college offer at any level.
[player_tooltip player_id="30012" first="Blake" last="Smithers"] | 6’1", 295 | Laker
Smithers is an underrated prospect with college ready size and strength. He shows solid quickness at the snap and plays with a relentless motor to chase down the quarterback. Smithers has the talent to play on the next level and should be seeing the offers come in this season.
*Before this article was published, Smithers received his first two offers from Northwood and Valparaiso.
[player_tooltip player_id="30015" first="Ray" last="Bell"] | 6’3", 250 | Grosse Pointe North
Bell is a strong run defender that can set the edge, shed and make tackles with some consistency. He flashes some pass rush ability, but he has the athleticism to get better in this area once he develops more rush moves. Bell has the size that college coaches look for and should see more interest with more exposure.
[player_tooltip player_id="30016" first="James" last="Clay"] | 6’3", 330 | Coloma
Clay is a massive, run stuffing nose tackle that is tough to move. He has the ability to reset the line of scrimmage and play in the backfield. Players with Clay's skillset have high value on early downs and college coaches should begin to take notice this season.
[player_tooltip player_id="30019" first="Tylor" last="McCoon"] | 6’5", 215 | Traverse City Central
McCoon is a talented punter, but he has a chance to be a productive defensive end at the next level as well. He is a relentless pass rusher with a long frame that has plenty of room to fill out. He has received some D2 interest so far, but that interest should turn into offers this season.
[player_tooltip player_id="30026" first="Joe" last="Botello"] | 6’3", 290 | Lansing Waverly
Botello is a bit of an unknown, but he has collegiate size. He shows solid quickness off the snap and can anchor the line of scrimmage. He is a player that should gain more interest with more exposure and a productive senior season.
[player_tooltip player_id="30029" first="Gavin" last="Hartman"] | 6’5", 243 | Lapeer
Hartman is a very underrated edge rusher and I'm surprised he hasn't received much recruiting interest. He has the size and length that college coaches want on the edge. He has begun to fill out his frame in order to become a better edge setter and he shows some potential as a pass rusher with his go-to swim move. Hartman is a player that should definitely see more interest this season and offers will be flowing in once coaches discover him.
[player_tooltip player_id="30030" first="Jalani" last="York"] | 6’4", 315 | Flint Harmady
York is a big, strong nose tackle that just needs more exposure. There wasn't a ton of film on York, but he had some interest from Michigan at one point and certainly has the size to be a collegiate player.
[player_tooltip player_id="30031" first="Justin" last="Howard"] | 6’0", 260 | Detroit King
Howard is a little undersized for an interior player, but he has solid get-off with some potential as a pass rusher. In the run game, he shows the ability to stack blocks at the point of attack and shed to make tackles. Howard plays for one of the best teams in the state and should have no problem getting exposure to college coaches this season.
Mekhi Esters | 6’5", 230 | Ypsilanti
Esters is a good athlete for the position with the size that college coaches want. He is not only a solid pass rusher, but he is also a good run defender that can hold his own at the point of attack. Esters needs more exposure, but he has the talent to play on the college level.
[player_tooltip player_id="30033" first="Evan" last="Williams"] | 6’5", 190 | Goodrich
Williams' lack of ideal weight is a likely cause for his lack of recruitment, but he has the long frame to suggest he could fill out at the next level. He is a very good athlete that is producive as both as a pass rusher and run defender. Williams' ability to play in the backfield will appeal to college coaches and should earn him offers despite his lack of bulk.
