Recruiting running backs is a challenge for college coaches. Many take into account how a running back will fit into their specific offensive system. Many great running backs play in offenses that do not feature running backs as well as they should. Many of the running backs in the Prep Redzone rankings play at elite programs where they are not the focal point of the offense. There are very talented running backs who produce big numbers on the field, but do not get recognition because of the size of their school or the offensive system they play in. Below are the top returning rushers in Southern California who have not been receiving the recruiting attention that they perhaps should be. 5. Tyler Kaschewski, Templeton, Templeton, 2021 I broke the rules here a little bit because Kashewski is a quarterback and not a running back, but college scouts will project him as an athlete. He ran for 1904 yards and threw for 1107 with 31 rushing touchdowns and 11 passing touchdowns. In a 69-61 win against Carmel, he rushed for 286 yards and five touchdowns and also threw two touchdown passes. Kaschewski has no offers yet but has drawn interest from Air Force and Boise State among others. https://twitter.com/ConnorCAllen/status/1170165170737299456?s=20 4. [player_tooltip player_id="25290" first="Floyd" last="Chalk"], Alemany, Mission Hills, 2022 Alemany is still one of the top programs in Southern California despite losing USC bound quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="25028" first="Miller" last="Moss"] and a big reason for that is returning running back [player_tooltip player_id="25290" first="Floyd" last="Chalk"]. He rushed for nearly 700 yards as a freshman in 2018 and had 1430 yards and 20 touchdowns for the Warriors as a sophomore last season. He ran for 207 yards and three touchdowns in a second round playoff win against Tesoro. Chalk has an offer from Penn State and has drawn interest from other schools. He isn’t a sleeper necessarily but he hasn’t drawn the recruiting interest a few other 2022 backs have gotten. https://twitter.com/robertschwinn/status/1175981579476226048?s=20 3. Jason Terry, Fairmont Prep, Anaheim, 2022 It doesn’t get more under the radar than Jason Terry of Fairmont Prep. Fairmont Prep is a K-12 school with around 500 students in its upper school and it’s not uncommon for the Huskies to play their games in front of crowds of under 100 people. As a freshman in 2018 Terry rushed for 1178 yards and 22 touchdowns and as a sophomore he rushed for 2186 yards and 28 touchdowns. He is one of Orange County’s most dynamic running backs and at 6-feet tall and 185 pounds, if he played at a bigger school he would be drawing much more recruiting interest. 2. Ivan Ostry, Rosemead, Rosemead, 2021 Another quarterback makes the list in Ivan Ostry of Rosemead. He is a quarterback but had more rushing attempts than passing last season. Ostry rushed for 2,284 yards and 28 touchdowns and threw 16 touchdown passes. He was directly involved in 44 of the team’s 51 touchdowns. Expect Ostry to lead Rosemead to another second place finish in the Mission Valley League and a possible deep playoff run. https://twitter.com/Coach_Castaneda/status/1191394254242775041?s=20 1. Eddie Allain, Norte Vista, Riverside, 2022 Norte Vista has turned itself into one of the best football programs in Riverside and much of its success last season was due to sophomore running back Eddie Allain. He had 32 touchdowns last season, the most of any returning player in the Southern Section. Allain rushed for 1986 yards and performed well when needed. He rushed for 247 yards in a season opening win against Paloma Valley and had 339 yards with five touchdowns in a first round playoff win over Rancho Mirage. He is on the smaller side at 5-foot-10, 170-pounds, but if he produces the way he did last year, he will garner some recruiting attention this year.
