Continue ReadingYou have seen most likely seen our city rankings for quarterbacks on Prep Redzone Minnesota, but this is our first ever QB1 rankings that cover a region. We’ve watched the film, found the many little towns on the map of northwest Minnesota, and have gathered the area rankings that make the top 6 quarterbacks the northwest region of Minnesota has to offer. We started the trip to the east to Perham, Pelican Rapids, and Barnesville, north to East Grand Forks, had to go away to the south into Cowboy Country in Breckenridge and then went north and finished our trip in the area’s largest city, Moorhead and watched the film from everywhere in between. These are the six names at quarterback that make the Northwest region of Minnesota a great area for high school football.
#6: McHale Korf, Pelican Rapids (2021)
The first thing that stood out with Korf is he is a very quick decision-maker. He starts our list at 6th in our rankings because he is a “project” to play college football at the next level. His footwork and touch need the most work as he throws the football quite off balance and as far as touch needs more pop on his throws between 10-15 yards and fewer lobs over the heads of the smaller secondary. Korf stands at 6’0 185 pounds and can show a blitz of speed if he has some space in the open field.
#5: Adam Tonsfeldt, Barnesville (2021)
A runner up at the 2A state championship at US Bank Stadium this fall, Tonsfeldt is back for more with the Trojans. Tonsfeldt size-wise at 5’7 isn’t your stereotypical QB1, but boy can this kid get shifty between would-be tacklers. He’s a scrappy runner that is very hard to tackle and has the option to run thru you with his blazing speed. Tonsfeldt fits more of an ATH prospect at the next level but when he seldomly does throw has better mechanics than you would expect as a top running QB1 on our list.
#4: Sam Votava Sam Votava ATH East Grand Forks | 2021 State MN , East Grand Forks (2021)
The more and more I watch football from Northwestern Minnesota the more I realize how popular the option is for QB1s in this region. Sam Votava Sam Votava ATH East Grand Forks | 2021 State MN of the Green Wave is no different. Votava shows some leverage when he leaves the pocket to run with an elusive first step. He needs to get more comfortable throwing from the pocket as his footwork is a little unorthodox and getting rid of the football faster than seen on film. His touch on his deep ball is consistent but could use a little more touch on his balls within 10-15 yards. Votava currently holds one football offer and significant college interest as well on the hardwood.
#3: Colton Hackel, Perham (2022)
Hackel has a blessing at tight end in 2021 NDSU commit Finn Diggins Finn Diggins TE Perham | 2021 State MN who accumulated roughly one-third of his passing yards last season. I enjoy watching Hackel’s football IQ on film as he knows exactly where he wants to go with the football every time even as an incoming junior. Hackel tallied around 2800 total yards last season for the Yellow Jackets and looks to be another high-level college prospect coming out of the little town of just under 3000 people. Look to see Hackel have a home on our Class of 2022 prospect rankings when they come out this month as his ability to be a strong runner and prolific passer should be a top QB1 in the region in the 2022 class.
#2: Cooper Yaggie Cooper Yaggie ATH Breckenridge | 2021 State MN , Breckenridge (2021)
Yaggie, a top 10 QB1 in our 2021 prospect rankings has a great knack for getting the football out quickly which is why he stands at 2 on this list. His arm strength gets a 4 out of 5 grade from us Prep Redzone Minnesota. I think Yaggie is a prospect that could play on either side of the football as he’s such a dominant athlete on both ends. My biggest miss I see on film from Yaggie is why he doesn’t use his relatively quick speed to get out of the pocket more often and make a play. That could be another weapon in his arsenal when the Cowboys take the field this fall. Yaggie currently holds two MIAC offers thus far.
#1: Trey Feeney Trey Feeney 6'2" | QB Moorhead | 2021 State MN , Moorhead (2021)
To not many people’s surprise in this region, Trey Feeney Trey Feeney 6'2" | QB Moorhead | 2021 State MN is Northwest Minnesota’s top quarterback. The recent North Dakota commit offers the total package in my opinion at the quarterback position. Arm strength, he’s got it, mobility, he’s got it, strong touch on the football, he’s got it and by the way, he’s a top 25 ranked prospect in our 2021 prospect rankings too and the #2 quarterback in all of Minnesota. The Fighting Hawks got a steal landing Feeney as if this kid’s talent was in the Twin Cities, he’d be getting Power 5 offers. He’s also got some excellent receivers in the Walthall brothers, in Blake Walthall Blake Walthall 6'1" | WR Moorhead | 2021 State MN and Brady Walthall Brady Walthall 6'1" | WR Moorhead | 2021 State MN amongst many more Moorhead Spuds.
