The class of 2021 has a ton of talented defensive backs from the state of North Carolina. However, there are some players that are not getting the attention they deserve or enough praise for their skills. I believe that all of these athletes have the ability to play at a Power 5 conference and make a difference on defense. Here are the most underrated DB’s from the 2021 NC class:
[player_tooltip player_id="28574" first="Kamron" last="Hoover"], DB, 5’10 and 165 lbs, Havelock HS
Hoover is a turnover-creating defensive back that is always creating takeaways for the defense and running back interceptions for touchdowns. He does this by watching the QB’s eyes and recognizing how the opponent’s play is developing. Hoover is also very good as a run defender because of his efficient tackling and ability to get around blocks. He would be best used in Man Coverage where he could use his solid footwork to stay with WRs. Kamron doesn’t currently have any offers.
[player_tooltip player_id="28551" first="Songa" last="Yates"], CB, 5’8 and 160 lbs, Zebulon B Vance HS
Yates is a very fast defensive back that can run with any wide receiver in the state. He possesses excellent anticipation on passing downs that allows him to make plays on the football. Songa is a good open field tackler because he keeps his pad level low and wraps up the opposing player. He puts himself in great position to make interceptions at important points in the game. Yates has 3 offers that includes Gardner Webb.
[player_tooltip player_id="28507" first="Bryson" last="Parker"], CB, 5’10 and 180 lbs, Weddington HS
Parker is physical defensive back that delivers hard hits on the field and constantly gets his hands on opposing wide receivers. He is so good at route recognition and uses that to mirror players on most passing downs. Parker has the unique ability to locate the ball with his back to the QB and has excellent ball skills at the catch point. He jams WRs at the line of scrimmage and can recover after getting beat at the start of the route. Bryson just recently committed to Richmond.
[player_tooltip player_id="28509" first="Jalen" last="Newman"], CB, 5’11 and 180 lbs, Weddington HS
Newman is an instinctive defensive back that makes snap decisions and breaks on the ball quickly. He is best at defending deep routes and elite at recognizing wide receiver screens then making the tackle. Also is great at defending the run and uses perfect tackling technique on opposing players. Newman can be relied upon in man or zone coverage because of his multifaceted skillset. Currently has 20 offers that includes Ohio, Navy, and Air Force.
[player_tooltip player_id="28513" first="Tyrell" last="Davis"], S, 6’1 and 180 lbs, Hickory Ridge HS
Davis is a do-it-all defensive back that lines up everywhere on the field and handles many different roles/responsibilities. He is great at making difficult interceptions away from his body and gets his hands on the majority of passes thrown his way. Davis can be used as a physical press DB that lines up against wide receivers and tight ends. He's an elite run defender that recognizes the direction of the play right away, sprints to the RB and hardly ever misses a tackle. Davis has 27 offers from schools like James Madison, Army, and UNCC.
