Continue ReadingThanks to Covid-19 a lot of our summer sports conversations and activities have become conversations of “what-ifs” and “if-onlys” instead of actual events and memories being made. I want to embrace that idea here and try to build the best possible 7-on-7 offense using only players from the Wisconsin high school football class of 2021. A team that could compete with any 7-on-7 team in the country leaving people saying “what if…” or “if only…”.
Quarterback
Caden Nelson- Waunakee, 6’3″ 200
Nelson has exactly what you want from your QB. Especially in this scenario. He has the arm strength to reach everywhere on the field at anytime. He has the accuracy to put the ball in any specific spot needed and he has the quick release to make it almost impossible for a defensive back to read and react in time to make a play on the ball. He is the perfect player to lead this team.
Running Back
Loyal Crawford- Eau Claire Memorial, 6’0″ 190
There is one word to describe Loyal Crawford: Electric. Every time he touches the ball it is legitimate scoring opportunity. He has everything you want in a running back. Speed, toughness, ability to run inside and outside, and can create plays on his own. It is easy to see why he was offered the chance to play at the RB factory that is Wisconsin. He did face some injuries last season, but it sounds like he is ready to go this season. You can’t leave him off this team if you want to win.

Flex
Garrett Gillette- Mukwonago, 6’5″ 215
This position did take some internal discussion, but in the end how can you pass on one of the top talents in the entire state at any position. Garrett will provide Nelson with a gigantic, seam stretching target and very sure hands. Gillette’s catch radius is unmatched and you will be hard pressed to find any defender that can cover even the majority of it. Garrett has garnered a ton of interest and offers before announcing Arizona State as the lucky recipient of his commitment.

Offensive Line
JP Benzschawel- Grafton, 6’7″ 265
Offensive line wouldn’t be too high on the list of importance when it comes to 7-on-7, but when you get the opportunity to have possibly the best player in the state and Badger commit on your team you jump at the chance. Benzschawel has the frame to continue to develop and fill out while maintaining his impressive athleticism. If you were to create your perfect lineman recruit for your favorite college team, like the Badgers, that player would most likely come out looking similar to JP. He can gain some shotgun snapping experience during his time with us on this elite, hypothetical team.

Receivers
Drew Biber- Cedarburg, 6’5″ 205
If you are going to create the best 7-on-7 team possible then your WR1 has to be the best receiver in the state. So, our first receiver is the Northern Illinois commit from Cedarburg. Similar to Gillette, Biber would provide Caden with a huge catch radius and surprising athleticism for his size. Drew knows how to attack the ball in the air and is able to create effective separation with his route running giving his QB an easy target that even in the worst case scenario is always open two feet above his head.
Jayden Jackson- Whitefish Bay, 6’3″ 185
Jayden is another big target with a nice catch radius, but his best trait is his ability to track the ball while it is in the air. His ability to adjust and attack the ball is impressive as is his ability to box out defenders at the catch point. Jackson is more of an overall playmaker than just a receiver. He has created success at DB, WR, QB, and returning punts. Just get him on the field and watch the show.

Matteo Bonnin- Hudson, 6’3″ 205
We wrap up our team with the addition of Matteo Bonnin. A receiver with the size we have clearly been looking for, but also with the speed to take it to the house on any route. He has shown the ability to make something out of nothing thanks to very good vision in tight quarters and the agility to make people miss and maneuver in those tight quarters. Just like the other ball handlers on this team, get it to him and watch what happens.
