Stepping into the high school environment as a freshman can be difficult to overcome, but doing so as the quarterback of the varsity football team shows how much character you truly have.
Last year, these Class of 2023 players did just that, leading their teams on the field during the fall.
And with a season of experience under their belts and time in the film room, you can bet big things are in store for them this year.
Here is a look at five of the top Class of 2023 quarterbacks in Iowa.

The top quarterback last year from the freshman class, [player_tooltip player_id="24026" first="Dallas" last="Sauser"] of Grinnell led the group in virtually every category.
Sauser completed 127 of 242 passes for 1,748 yards with 15 touchdowns. He had just five interceptions and earned a 113.2 quarterback rating in his first varsity season.
The Tigers finished the year strong, going 6-3 with a close 28-14 loss in the regular season finale to Pella. They also earned wins over Newton, Knoxville and Adel-ADM.
Sauser had one of his best games down the stretch, completing 13 of 18 for 309 yards with four TDs vs. South Tama.
Grinnell will have Sauser, leading rusher [player_tooltip player_id="23897" first="Wyatt" last="Hunter"] and top receivers [player_tooltip player_id="23869" first="Cole" last="McGriff"], Owen Coffman and AJ Wilkins all back in 2020.
Brody Tuttle - Seymour
Right behind Sauser in most passing categories for ninth-graders last year sat Seymour’s Brody Tuttle.
Tuttle completed 84 passes for 1,001 yards with 11 touchdowns, but did struggle by throwing 17 interceptions.
The Warriors also failed to win a game, but Tuttle showed his growth over the season, throwing for 235 yards and three touchdowns in the regular season finale.
[player_tooltip player_id="24024" first="Max" last="Burt"] - Mason City Newman
A top baseball player for state contenders Mason City Newman, [player_tooltip player_id="24024" first="Max" last="Burt"] found himself under center to begin last year as a freshman.
Burt found plenty of success on the gridiron, completing 48 of 82 passes for 674 yards with nine touchdowns.
In a win over Starmont, Burt completed 7 of 9 for 128 yards with three of those completions going for touchdowns. He also had 13 tackles on defense and averaged 31 yards per punt.
August Stock - Monroe-PCM
It will be interesting to see what Monroe-PCM does at the quarterback position this coming fall as senior-to-be Sage Burns returns, as does sophomore-to-be August Stock.
Stock started several games, finishing the year with 476 yards passing and five touchdowns, while adding 93 yards on the ground.
He is more of a typical quarterback, having completed 40 of 67 passes on the season.
The Mustangs, who reached the state quarterfinals, also have standout running back Aiden Anderson returning to the offense.
Max Hough - GTRA
A high-level basketball player, GTRA’s Max Hough started his freshman campaign as the starting quarterback on the football field.
Hough threw for 809 yards with four touchdowns, completing 72 of 175 passes for the Titans, who won just one game but had four losses by 10 points or less.
Hough also ran for 245 yards and recorded 37 tackles on defense with two interceptions and two fumble recoveries.
