It may be less than 3 months until football season but these are my Rochester area city rankings of the best quarterbacks this area has to offer. After watching hours and hours of film from programs like Rochester Century, Rochester John Marshall, Kasson-Mantorville, Grand Meadow, and so many more within 30 minutes of Rochester, this is my list.
Disclosure: Some will ask why is Will Tschetter of Stewartville is not on this list. Due to Will’s focus on college basketball recruiting and having a lack of film and stats from last season, we felt it is necessary to exempt him from this list even though he’s a great football player! At Prep Redzone Minnesota, our main focus is exposing the less known prospects in our state and I feel like we did a great job of that with our QB1 rankings list below!
#5 Mason Barker, Triton (2021)
Barker is the rawest quarterback on this list. Barker’s focus on film isn’t about throwing the ball as far as he can, but his timing and finding the best throw available. Barker actively gets his football out of his hands in around 2 seconds consistently which I have learned is almost an entire second faster than you want to be. Barker was 3-1 last season with his quarterback rating was over 94+.for the Cobras.
#4 Willie Holm III, Zumbrota-Mazeppa (2021)
Holm on tape ranks slightly over Barker for two reasons, one being his timing of consistently getting rid of the football is mostly less than two seconds, and he has a much stronger arm to show for. Holm, however, has some flaws on tape, as he had a few plays where he held onto the football for too long and had minimal gains on both plays where he had to use his energetic stamina to get past the line of scrimmage. Holm won’t be breaking any speed records when he leaves the pocket, but his running ability is appealing when he finds a lane heading in for six points.
#3 Cole Peterson, Rochester John Marshall (2021)
Peterson is the best dual-threat QB on this list. His ability to make something out of nothing on his runs is tremendous as his quick feet and mobility will make defenses cringe. His arm strength is superb, and his ball placements look consistent on film. The size is the downfall of Peterson. At 150 pounds, although his speed is tremendous, the amount of liability he places on himself in running high traffic areas on the football field would make me extra cautious as a quarterbacks coach.
#2 Drew Scheuer, Bryon (2021)
Scheuer’s poise is one of a few key items that stood out me on film. He’s doesn’t play afraid when the defense finds the backfield, has a great touch when releasing the football, and has a good knack for placing the football on his throws. His windup on his throws is slightly a bit long and could use some training, but overall Scheuer’s timing gives him one of the better arms in the Rochester area. Scheuer also has the best college football ready bodies on this list at 6’2 and near 200 pounds which is one of the tallest names on here.
#1 Nathan Eberhart Nathan Eberhart QB Rochester Century | 2021 State MN , Rochester Century (2021)
We at PRZ Minnesota have known about Eberhart since last season when he was on my Way Too Early list of top 2021 quarterbacks in the entire state of Minnesota. Coming off a near 2000 yard season, 23 touchdowns to only 8 interceptions, Eberhart is the top QB1 the Rochester area has to offer. He does so much with the football with just a 2-4 step drop as a pocket passer and has solid ball placement on his throws. I think he’s one that can use his feet even more, as when he does jump out of the pocket he definitely can be a threat if the defense isn’t careful. Eberhart has good touch on the football and in my opinion, is an under the radar QB1 that deserves more love, as he only has one Division III offer on the table right now. You can read more about Nathan here in his recruiting report we did back in January
