High School Football has always used the quote “it’s not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog,” in many cases that rings true, this is another one of cases. Brandon Caturia is a 5’9″, 142 lbs. DB for the Lakers of Howard Lake- Waverly- Winsted. He got the nod to start his Sophomore campaign at Cornerback, racking up 37 total tackles (21 solo, 16 assisted) and 2 INT’s. I came across Caturia’s film doing some research for an article of teams who may contain some hidden gems. In 2015, the Lakers made State with a 4-7 record, so I kept my eye on them every year to see if what potential they had. No matter what they do in the regular season, they usually squeaked out a playoff win each year. This season they did that again, upsetting No. 2 Concordia Academy in the first round 26-7 and nearly knocking off No. 3 St. Agnes in the semi-finals, 14-12. Caturia did an excellent job as a young corner in the pass game in a zone defense, but also stepping up and making perimeter tackles on screens and outside runs. He did his job containing the ballcarrier and turning him back in and wrapping up to make the tackle. In coverage, his awareness is already impressive on knowing where his guy is and reading the QB at the same time, he also has recovery speed and ball skills to make plays without penalty. He got some snaps at QB this year as well, another scrambling QB who makes good throws on the run. With experience, this kid will gain confidence and will have high honors coming his way. Check out my interview with him below!
PRZ: Hello Brandon, tell us a little about yourself and how you began playing football.
Caturia: I will be a Junior at HLWW in 2020. I’ve been playing football since 1st grade, it has always been a big part of my life.
PRZ: What do you love about the game? How was your 2019 season as a team and personally?
Caturia: I love the intensity and competitiveness of the game. Our 2019 season as a team was very challenging, we were a very young team. We did not let that get the best of us though, we played our hearts out each game, even though most games didn’t go our way, we still played very well. Personally, my season was one I’ll remember. I started as a Sophomore, which was challenging, but made me a better player.
PRZ: What were your expectations for you and your team?
Caturia: I set expectations for myself to make at least 30 tackles and one interception. I exceeded both of those with 37 tackles and 2 INT’s. I set goals to help not only myself, but my team as well. For the team, our expectations were to grow each game and learn from our mistakes. We have become closer as players and as friends, we are all family to one another.
PRZ: How has your recruiting been going? Are you in contact with any schools? What are you interested in a college program?
Caturia: So far, I’m not in contact with any schools. I’m hoping to use my Junior year to get in contact with some schools. I’m interested in a school with a close bond between coaches and players, but is also competitive. I would like to go to a school with a program that shares the same passion as I do for football.
