Continue ReadingThe dominance of the SMB Wolfpack during the late 2010’s will go down in Minnesota lore as possibly one of the most talented teams in recent history, and their reign is still ongoing. To continue to compete for 4A state championships they will need one particular recruit – whose talent is vastly overlooked – to step up big in 2020 in order to repeat these deep playoff runs.
Robinson.Good thing Savion Robinson (5’11, 170 lbs.) is ready. The talented WR posted 15 catches for close to 300 yards and 4 TDs in 2019, and spoke with NFN about his hopes for a monster 2020, his career playing for the Wolfpack so far, and where he is trying to play in college. Enjoy! Junior Year Hudl
NFN: Hello and thank you for your time, Savion! If you could start with some personal information about yourself and what you like about playing the game I’d appreciate it.
Robinson: “I grew up in St. Paul, Minnesota, then moved to Indiana for a bit but decided to move back. I started playing football when I was in 2nd grade up until 7th grade then I stopped to play basketball, but my sophomore year I decided football could get me farther in life. Football has gotten me through a lot of things and that’s what I love about it. I’m 5’11 and 170lbs my 40 time is 4.62.”
NFN: Now get into SMB’s 2018 championship season and how it was for you personally as well.
Robinson: “Last year my stats weren’t really amazing because it was my first year back in 3 years but I finished with 13 receptions and 112 yards, last years season was honestly life changing, it showed me a lot about putting trust into your teammates. Last year I scored my first ever varsity touchdown, that feeling was definitely one I will never lose. Although at the beginning of last year I played defensive back until the last few games of the season. After the season was over I wasted no time to get to work, I started training, lifting, and watching film. Then came 2019 I had a breakout season.”
NFN: That’s right. What were your expectations coming into the season and how did the year go in some detail?
Robinson: “My expectations for 2019 was to win another state chip back to back. Playing with key athletes like those guys is great, it prepares me for the college level because of the athleticism and strength those guys have. The winning atmosphere is what I like most about our program. Our first 8 games were honestly sort of boring, we would blow teams out so our coaches would take us out at halftime. We didn’t really play any necessarily heavy football based schools. The bsm game was probably the biggest highschool game in Minnesota, It was super exciting as well as the Hutch game. That competition was the most we faced all year. Going into the state championship we honestly had zero energy.”
NFN: That’s interesting and also makes a lot of sense. So what’s going on with your recruiting? Who are some teams you’ve been in contact with and what are you looking for in a potential college program?
Robinson: “SDSU, NDSU, UND, Iowa State, and Western Illinois are the main D1 schools looking at me right now, I plan on going on a few visits during junior days.
Robinson.UMD is really the only D2 school hitting me up right now. Last year I only went to Wisconsin and Minnesota, but this upcoming camp season I play on going to a lot of camps. So far my recruitment process has been pretty slow but after colleges see what I can really do this camp season, hopefully it will blow up. Any college that takes a chance on me won’t regret it.”
I see a big fall of 2020 for Savion as he attempts to get SMB back to U.S. Bank Stadium.
