After releasing the full feature, I thought it would be both appropriate as well as interesting to post each Trojans individual interview so our readers can receive as much exclusive insight into the success of 2019, as well as what it means to these boys to be a Trojan, and what lessons they have learned from the ride.In these individual interviews that I used as sources for the feature, the Wayzata players give even more detail into the inner workings of the team and their keys to success. This “Championship Edition” of NFN’s “Insider Info” highlights Wayzata’s LB and ’21 graduate Cole Brown (5’11, 195 lbs.).
Brown (31) going beast-mode.A big-time MIAC and NSIC recruit who also excels on the baseball diamond representing Wayzata’s state championship caliber baseball squad, Brown shared with us some of the big moments of ’19, his career at Wayzata thus far, big plays from the state championship game, and how playing for the Trojans has prepared him for his next steps in life as well as college football. I hope you enjoy! Hudl:
NFN: It has been an incredible year for you and the Wayzata Trojans. First begin by just telling us what it means for you to be a Trojan, and what your career has been like at Wayzata.
Brown: “It has been an incredible year for you and the Wayzata Trojans. First begin by just telling us what it means for you to be a Trojan, and what your career has been like at Wayzata.“
NFN: Walk us through some of differences the program has seen since you were a freshman to now senior. What difference can you credit with having the biggest impact on the Trojans success this year?
Brown: “Being a Trojan means so much to me. Ever since I was a kid I always took pride in being a Trojan. This season was my first experience with varsity sports, and it was amazing to be able to represent Wayzata with my teammates.”
NFN: How was the 2018 season for you as well as Wayzata? What were some big games, low moments, and how did you build off 2018 to succeed in 2019? How was the offseason and how is it playing defense with studs like Loshiaka, Robertson, and Demro?
Brown: “I didn’t play freshmen or sophomore year, but I was there in the summer for practices before my back started acting up. The biggest difference I noted is how close the team was this year, it was truly like a family. I didn’t play football last year, but I know two tough losses to Minnetonka and Eden Prairie definitely gave us some extra inspiration for this season.
Brown chases down a CP running back.Practicing with those guys really showed me how to work and what it takes to be a great player. With it being my first year playing football at the high school, it was so much better because of how good those guys treated me. There was a lot of great players on our team, but I truly believe the biggest reason for our success was because all of those great players were also great leaders and treated everyone with respect.
NFN: Describe the 2019 regular season. How was it going undefeated? When did you know you guys were going to be legit, especially on defense?
Brown: “The 2019 season was amazing in every way, not only did we have success on the field, we were a family off the field. It was an amazing feeling to go undefeated representing Wayzata. I knew that we were going to be great as soon as two-a-days started. I realized that everyone on the team was selfless and that’s when you can get a truly special team. I remember telling my dad during two-a-days that “we have something special here.”
NFN: Elaborate on the state playoffs and especially the championship game! What were some big plays and moments, and how was your performance?
Brown: “The playoffs were a great experience, there’s no better feeling than going out on a Friday night with your brothers and extending the season. The championship game was also a crazy experience, I’ve always dreamed of playing in a game like that and being a part of hanging up a banner at Wayzata. There were several big moments in the game, one of the biggest was when got that long kick return. I had my back turned to him blocking and just heard the roar of the crowd which was very cool. I felt like I did my 1/11th out there on the field so I’m satisfied with how I played.”
NFN: What will stay with you as a Trojan as you transition into the next step of your football career? How has Wayzata prepared you for college football if it’s something you’re interested in?
Brown: “The biggest thing that will stay with me is just the memories from this season. On and off the field, we made some great memories together. Wayzata has prepared me for college football just by being around great players every day and learning from them.”
Cole is set for a big 2021 season and the LB is a baller that college coaches should keep an eye out for! Stay tuned for news on Mr. Brown!
