LaShad Smith is a 5’8″, 170 pound RB/DB for the Luverne Cardinals. I covered two games where Smith really showed off his skills against two very good opponents. Offensively, he was a playmaker out of the backfield, with a lot of agility and great vision he can find the open space and turn a play into big yards. He was also a reliable receiver out of the backfield making big plays catching as well. Defensively, he played pretty tight defense on the receiver, keeping them in check, also plays well in his zone on the cover 3. I was able to catch up with Smith to interview him about his Junior season and what his plans are for his Senior season. Check it out!
LaShad Smith- Greg HoogeveenNFN: Hello LaShad, tell us a little bit about yourself and when you began playing football.
Smith: I started playing football in 5th grade in Minneota.
NFN: What do you love about the game?
Smith: I love all aspects of the game; offense, defense, special teams, film, and being part of the team!
NFN: What was your 2019 season like for you and your team?
Smith: We went 7-3, which was an improvement from the season prior (4-5). Personally, I was happy with my year, I had 661 yards on 107 carries and 6 TD’s. I also had 7 receptions for 117 yards and one receiving TD. Defensively I had 20.5 tackles and 3 INT’s with maybe 10-12 pass-break-ups.
NFN: What were your expectations coming into this season for you and the team?
Smith: This was my first year in Luverne, so I didn’t know what to expect, I was just trying to find a place on the team to fit in and help us win.
NFN: How is your recruiting process going? Has anyone contacted you? What are you looking for in a college?
Smith: I have received interest from some NAIA schools and some JUCO’s. I’m looking to continue playing football as well as receiving a quality education at the highest division possible.
NFN: What are your expectations for next season?
Smith: As a team, our goal is to improve more next year, I think we all should have the goal to get to State next year. Personally, I want to get stronger, faster and do anything I can to help our team win.
