Last night Northstar Football News took our talents to the campus of St. Johns University to watch two Section 4 finals in 2A/1A. This game recap will cover Browerville/Eagle Valley vs. Mayer Lutheran from quarter 1 to the end of the game.
This one got started by the Crusaders of Mayer Lutheran when QB Ty Hoese Ty Hoese 6'2" | 190 lbs | QB Mayer Lutheran | 2022 State MN found TE Teigan Martin Teigan Martin 6'6" | 220 lbs | TE Mayer Lutheran | 2022 State MN to start up the game with Mayer Lutheran creating the momentum. The momentum didn’t last long when Browerville/Eagle Valley KR Carter Meiners ran the fist kickback to the Crusaders 40-yard line to get the Tigers started on offense for the night. Meiners was key on this drive that ended with an RB Austin Carr 1-yard touchdown to tie the game up at 6 apiece. The Tigers defense got a big sack from DE Adam Lindquist to start the next defensive drive. On the same drive, Hoese threw a nice ball to WR Charlie Broveleit Charlie Broveleit 6'0" | 285 lbs | OL Holy Angels | 2022 State MN who dropped the key pass that would have went for a touchdown for the Crusaders. In the lone passing play on the game for Browerville/Eagle Valley, WR Nye Becker caught a nice ball from QB Cory Meyer. We would be tied the end of the 1st quarter at 6-6 but with the Tigers of Browerville/Eagle Valley threatening.
The 2nd quarter was led off with the start of the RB Mason Gode show for an 8-yard run for a touchdown to put Browerville/Eagle Valley up 12-6 with 10:38 left in the 2nd quarter. We’d then see Hoese of Mayer Lutheran throw an interception to my all-purpose player of the game Carter Meiners who picked the ball off for the Tigers. From the 50-yard line, RB Mason Gode got running again and ran for a 50-yard touchdown for the Tigers for his second touchdown of the day to put Browerville/Eagle Valley 20-6. After about 5 minutes of no scoring, the Crusaders of Mayer Lutheran got their main target WR Teigan Martin Teigan Martin 6'6" | 220 lbs | TE Mayer Lutheran | 2022 State MN for another Crusaders touchdown to trim the lead to 20-14 in favor of Browerville-Eagle Valley with half the time left in the 2nd quarter. That mark would put Martin over 100 yards receiving of the day for the Crusaders.
After a three and out for the Tigers after the half, the Crusaders drove down the field and got their TE Austin Crown who had a big game in the semifinals, involved with a nice block to get into the end zone which gave the Crusaders a 21-20 lead over Browerville/Eagle Valley into the 3rd quarter. The defensive play of the game goes to Mayer Lutheran’s DL Andrew Kuhnau who sacked Browerville/Eagle Valley for a 21-yard sack. The Crusaders would then get the ball to give the ball right back to the Tigers with the fumble recovery by DL Austin Carr. The Austin Carr show would also resume on offense, as he would run for a 34-yard rushing touchdown to put Browerville/Eagle Valley up 28-21 with 3:45 left in the 3rd quarter.
After the Tigers got the lead, Mayer Lutheran flipped the field as QB Ty Hoese Ty Hoese 6'2" | 190 lbs | QB Mayer Lutheran | 2022 State MN hooked up with his main target, WR Teigan Martin Teigan Martin 6'6" | 220 lbs | TE Mayer Lutheran | 2022 State MN for a 44-yard pass. That throw got Hoese to over 200 yards passing on the game, which may be one of his best games of the year. Unfortunately, Mayer Lutheran would go for it on 4th down and would be stopped short by no one else, then Mason Gode. With the rushing attack of Browerville/Eagle Valley, they would have two running backs with 100 yards rushing with Mason Gode and Austin Carr running down the throat of the Mayer Lutheran defense. Then Browerville got all aboard the Mason Gode train again, and his 33-yard rushing touchdown got the Tigers lead to 15, at 36-21 in the middle of the 4th quarter. After some back and forth, Browerville/Eagle Valley would close out the game and lock their ticket to the state tournament when Austin Carr punched in his 3rd touchdown of the night, which would be the last scoring we’d see in this game.
Browerville/Eagle Valley (9-1) will play Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop (9-2) at Husky Stadium in St. Cloud on Saturday at 7:00 PM. This will be the Tigers 4th trip to state since 2011 under head coach Ribsy Petermeier which is an outstanding state-run they have had in the last 8 seasons.
Mayer Lutheran will finish their season at 9-2, in a section where they won two section games and finished their regular season at 7-1.
