The 5’11, 170 lb. ran good routes combined with soft hands to consistently make tough catches at home versus Eden Prairie when I saw them a few Friday’s ago. The senior is following up a junior season where he only put up 120 yards and two touchdowns with a 39 catch, 623-yard, four touchdown performance in 2019 according to MNFootballHub. With a big section game tonight versus Eastview at Edina, the Hornets will need Malim to step up in a big way for the Hornets to the W.

NFN: Hello, Hamza. Tell our readers a little bit about yourself, where you’re from, and when you started playing football.
Malim: “My name is Hamza Malim and I was born and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota. I am a captain at Edina High School and I started playing football my 7th grade year. I also play basketball. I like to hangout with my teammates, friends, and family. I also like hanging around the lakes in the summer, preferably Lake Minnetonka. I like everything about the game of football-from watching film, to practice, and of course game days. There’s no better feeling than going to war with your brothers on Friday nights in front of our fans. Another thing is the life lessons you learn while playing football. Nothing is guaranteed, you got to work hard in order to get what you want. I’m 5’11, 170 lbs. I run a 4.6 forty and last season I had about 120 yards and two touchdowns.
NFN: What was Edina’s season like last year? What did you learn from it and what were some highlights and lowlights?
Malim: “Our season last year went great, but unfortunately it didn’t end the way we wanted it to. A highlight of our season was when we beat Minnetonka and put up 21 points in the 1st quarter. People didn’t really know we were capable of putting up 21 in the first. One lowlight is of course losing to STMA in the section championship-everyone knows how it went so we can just end it at that. I learned a lot last year individually. Having a great senior class helped a lot. Our captains were great last year. Just having guys you can look up to on and off the field like Matt (Cavanagh-now playing at Harvard), Quinn (Carroll-now at Notre Dame), and Ben and John. As a team all we can control is effort and if we do that everything else will fall into place.”

Malim: “This offseason I worked with Coach TJ from TNT Academy and Coach Opsal. Those guys helped me a lot this past offseason. Playing for the football program here at Edina is great. Coach Lamker and his coaching staff prepare you for the real world. They want what’s best for you on the field but what’s most important to them is the relationships you build with your teammates and being great men off the field.”
NFN: What were the first eight regular season games like this season? Who’d you play and how did they go for your team as well as yourself individually?
Malim: “The first eight games were decent, we can always be better though. The competition was great. Every game was a battle and that’s what you should want because come playoffs you will be ready. Now that playoffs have started we just have to take it one game at a time. We know what the end goal is. It’s a day by day process, nothing will be guaranteed. We just have to keep getting better at practice and at watching film.”
NFN: Any recruiting news?
Malim: “For the recruiting part I just want to play at the highest level possible. I believe I can play D1 football whether it’s FCS or FBS.”
Keep an eye out for news on the Hornet’s road to state as well as where Malim will be taking his talents to next year.
