Known primarily for its wrestling program, the town of 8,000ish is currently home to a 2021 football and track & field star that has posted one of the fastest 100 M times in the state for a football player and is a dynamic playmaker that could improve a college football team immensely. Currently six weeks into his junior campaign, Gaven Ziebarth (6’0, 205) of the Cambridge-Isanti Bluejackets was kind enough to answer a few questions in an exclusive interview with Northstar Football News where we discussed how he got into football, the Bluejacket season, and his college football recruitment.
NFN: Hello, Gaven. Where are you from and when did you start playing football and what do you like about the sport?
Ziebarth: “I’m from Cambridge-Isanti and I’m 6’0, 205 pounds. I started playing football in 4th grade and I play hockey and baseball, and run track as well. I love the game of football because of the brotherhood you gain by playing with your best friends through high school as well as the atmosphere you get to play in. On the track last year I took 8th in the state in the 100M with a time of 10.93 and have ran a personal best of 10.88. Last years stats for football were 70 carries for 553 yards (7.9 per attempt).”
NFN: Tell our readers a little bit about Cambridge-Isanti’s 2018 season as well as this years team. What did you learn from it and how was your season personally?
Ziebarth: “Last years team went to state with a very heavy senior squad. I am the only returning starter from that team so this year we are a lot younger and are improving and learning every game. There was a lot I learned from last year that I’ve improved on this year with offseason lifting and footwork. I worked on being more explosive with quicker feet and cutting more quickly which was a weakness of mine. I ran a 4.54 forty-yard dash at the Gopher camp this summer with a 9’8 broad jump and a 36-inch vertical.”
NFN: Any news with recruiting? What schools have you been in contact with and how has the recruitment process been so far?
Ziebarth: “I’ve received gameday invites from Minnesota, SDSU, and NDSU. Minnesota is a team I’ve always been a fan of and it would be awesome to get an opportunity to play there. It’s very humbling to get the opportunity and chances from these schools and I don’t take anything for granted when it comes to playing the game of football because it doesn’t last forever.”
Keep an eye out for the speedster on the gridiron as well as the track. With those numbers Ziebarth posted at the Gopher camp it shouldn’t be long before an offer finds the Cambridge-Isanti product.
