Knights Break a Series of Streaks in First Win of the Season
Russell-Tyler-Ruthton
“One thing we said going into this week was that we needed to play the whole game.” stated RTR Head Coach Josh Fredrickson following the 40-12 victory over the Lancers Friday Night. “We knew if we played hard this week we would have a good shot to come out on top. We had plenty of guys step up tonight and make plays.”
The RTR Knights scored on their opening drive with Hayden Gravley taking a screen pass from Payton Hess 62 yards to the end zone. Their next possession, Hess would hit Darrick Baartman on a 48 yard fade for another touchdown. Right before the half, Jonah Christensen would take a reverse and pull up and throw a pretty pass to a wide-open Baartman on a well-executed 22 yard trick play. After exchanging punts, the Knights would get back on the board with Hess pounding in a six yard keeper. The following RTR drive finished with Hess finding Christensen on a 10 yard dime. The scoring for RTR would end with Hess taking a second keeper in from two yards out.
Friday night’s win was RTR’s first win IN Canby since 2007. It was also their first win over the Lancers since 2011. Lastly, it was their first win in 11-man since 2016.

“We played well, just any time we gained momentum, RTR took it right back with Turnovers or tackles for loss.” Canby Head Coach Nick Kockelman recalled after the game. “We gave them too many short fields too often, while we played with too many long fields. They made a lot of big plays that seemed to make us lose our focus.”
