Big Plays in the First Half boost Fairmont over Luverne
Fairmont
“The pick-6 really swung the momentum in our favor,” Head Coach Mat Mahoney said after the victory, “Luverne was driving and our guys made a play to stop them. We kept our making the plays we needed to finish the game. All week, we said ‘practice and play like a champion’ which I think we did tonight.”
Fairmont opened the game with a 5-yard touchdown toss from Zach Jorgenson to Blake Buntjer. After a punt, Jorgenson would take the ball in from 9 yards out for their second score. Wyatt Frank would intercept a pass out of his defensive end position and take it 72 yards for 6. Right before the half, Jorgenson would hook up with Cale Stueber for a 33-yard score to bring the score to 27-12. Jorgenson would find Stueber again for a 16-yard score in the second half as well. Jorgenson would cap the scoring for Faimont with a 11 yard scamper to bring the score to 40-20.

2020
Wide Receiver/Defensive Back- Cale Stueber was a great red zone target, was able to get himself open on many plays.
Defensive Back- Zach Soelter seemed to have his hand in on every tackle. He read the offense well and covered the secondary tight.
Running Back/Defensive Back- Caden Baarts had a lot of long runs out of the backfield and played really good defense on receivers.
Offensive Lineman- Carson Toomer did really well on his pull blocks to open up space for the run game.
Offensive Lineman- Jacob Rahn opened wide seams for his backs to run through. Really held his blocks until the whistle.
2022
Quarterback/Defensive Back- Zach Jorgenson controlled the game on the ground and through the air, getting positive yardage on almost every play.
Running Back- Gavin Rodning had some great physical runs and had some bursts of speed as well.
Luverne
“Fairmont is a very good team,” Todd Oye said following the loss, “I’m happy with the way we competed. Fairmont had a lot of big plays and kept the momentum for the entire game. We had some injuries but we looked good with the quick adjustments we had to make.”
Luverne scored on their second possession with Bailey Cowell finding Ishaiah Bartels on a 5 yard crossing route. Cowell would also have a 16 yard scamper late in the first half. In the second half, Casey Sehr threw a touchdown pass to Jacob VonTersch from 13 yards out, Sehr would connect with Colby Crabtree for the 2-point conversion to round out the scoring.
Players Highlighted from Luverne
Zach Ahrendt- NCSA2020
Offensive/Defensive Lineman- Zach Ahrendt opened up holes for his backs and gave the quarterback lots of time.
Wide Receiver/Defensive Back- Jacob VonTersch had his receiver locked down on defense and had some good catch and runs on offense.
Wide Receiver- Matt Sehr was the go-to guy for the quarterbacks in this game, ran good routes and sat in open space and made the catch.
2021
Running Back/Linebacker- LaShad Smith was the playmaker on key downs whether it was receiving or rushing.
Athlete- Bailey Cowell played QB,WR and DB in the game, he made some good throws, became a good target, and played good defense. He played the last three quarters with a bad limp but still finished the game.
2022
Linebacker- Jaimie McCarthy was all over the field and made a lot of tackles, has a good nose for the football.
