Continue ReadingFriday night lights is back in Becker as they celebrated the 50th year of Becker Bulldogs football all under the same head coach, Dwight Lundeen. Monticello and Becker, two programs that are 8 miles, 10 minutes apart brought a packed house at Eppard Field on Friday night.
The first quarter started off as a defensive battle and both teams went into the end of the 1st quarter with a 0-0 score. Then with a great offensive drive put together by Becker QB Josh Fobbe and WR Austin Berning, the Bulldogs were able to drive down to the Monticello 3-yard line and setup a nice 20 yard field goal from kicker Emma Domka, who also plays girls’ soccer for Becker for a 3-0 Becker lead. Might I say the Becker fans were ecstatic to witness Domka make her 1st kick of the year for the Bulldogs to start the 50th season of Becker football in the right direction.
The second quarter came and went as we concluded with a 3-0 Becker lead going into halftime. Halfway thru the 3rd quarter was when this game got interesting. Monticello QB Alex Optaz threw a crucial interception in which Becker safety Hunter Klatt took back for a Becker pick 6 turning the Bulldogs lead to 10-0 at the 6:54 mark in the 3rd quarter. Monticello’s offense was rather sub par but was led by RB Sam Valor, who ran a 42-yard kick return to the middle of the field for the Magic and had several long gains in the 2nd half. Calvin Schmitz, the Magic’s other tailback also had a good showing in the 2nd half after getting very small gains in the first half. Becker on the other hand, was taking advantage big time of the FB Dive plays put together by 5’5 160 pound Isaac Koop who ran a 22 yard up the middle for another Becker Bulldogs touchdown to give them now a 16-0 lead. Koop to my count had 6 carries, 51 yards, 8.5 YAC, 1 TD and 1 reception for 20 yards on the game.
Monticello was able to get on the board in the 4th quarter with a short field goal to make the game 16-3 with Becker leading. Late in the game, Fobbe found his top deep target and my game MVP in Carter Hietala who had 5 receptions, 100+ yards receiving, and 1 TD on the night to put Becker’s lead to 22-3. That would be where the score would end at Eppard Field last night as Becker’s stout defense throughout the entire game lead by Teddy Halvorson at linebacker and strong play from defensive end Riley Morrell, nose guard Travis Voigt, and linebacker Tommy Halvorson lead the charge for the Bulldogs. Becker (1-0) will be at home again next week against ranked Hutchinson. Monticello (0-1) will go home next Friday and play Cambridge-Isanti, who you can check out in my most recent program profile on the Northstar Football News website. Week 1 is a wrap, onto week 2!
