The Caledonia Warriors have been perfect on the gridiron for four seasons in convincing fashion, not only winning the Prep Bowl at the end of each of them, but also putting up gaudy numbers in them! The Warriors have outscored their Prep Bowl opponents 179-18 while pitching two shutouts in the big game.
I was able to get an interview over-the-phone with Head Coach Carl Fruechte about his team’s success the past four seasons.
How would you recap the 2018 season?
“This season was a rebuilding year, we lost a lot of experience on both sides of the ball. The team had some adversity off the field which we addressed immediately at the beginning of the season. The team overcame that adversity and ultimately achieved the big goal at the end of the season.”
Do you have any goals going into each season?
“As a coaching staff, our main goal is to teach boys how to become men and having a blue-collar work ethic, the success has just been a by-product of the team taking initiative amongst themselves.”
Is there any pressure felt trying to maintain the streak?
“We just tell the team to take it one game at a time, it’s silly to think about, but the pressure is felt more by the players than us coaches. When it ends, nothing will change, we will still hit the weights hard, watch film on the next team and prep like we always do. We view the streak as something to bring Minnesota football more respect.”
How would you describe your team as a whole?
“Each year we try to get the team to feel like a family, so each of them love coming to practice and workouts and want to help this team continue the success we’ve already experienced.”
In the Warriors’ success, they have had varying degrees of success sending players to the college level. With the proven success of the past few seasons, they hope to put more of their athletes on the radar for college programs.
“I hope that our streak is able to put not only our team, but many of the good teams that class 2A has to offer. We also would like to prove that good athletes can come from any school, no matter the size.”-Carl Fruechte said to cap the interview.
