Top-ranked Eden Prairie and No. 2 Lakeville North square off in a battle of two of the perennial Class AAAAAA powerhouses. The Eagles and Panthers last played in the 2013 state quarterfinals, a 42-14 Eden Prairie rout. Both teams picked up easy victories in last week's season opener.
In Class AAAA, Holy Angels gets a big early season test when it travels to No. 5 South St. Paul. The fourth-ranked Stars have veteran players on both sides of the ball, but the Packers new-found passing attack could give them the offensive versatility to put a lot of pressure on opposing defenses.
The final top-five tilt is a cross-class matchup in the Twin City District between St. Croix Lutheran and SMB. The Crusaders are the No. 2 team in Class AAA after the opening week, while the Wolfpack are slotted third in Class AAAA. Playing against one of the favorites in Class AAA should provide some insight into the long-term ability of SMB to contend in Class AAAA, depending on the outcome.
