Bowles’ speed and power off the edge make it extremely difficult for tackles to block him in pass protection. His explosive get-off immediately stresses tackles as they struggle to gain the depth to match him. Even if offenses try to slow him down by stretching his rush with sprint out protection with the help of the running back, he has the speed to beat both the tackle and running back to the outside to pressure the quarterback. The same can be said when he slants into B-Gap, beating guards with speed, making it difficult for them to get their hands on him. He can read and diagnose the play based on the tackle’s block as well. Unlike many rushers off the edge, he doesn’t run himself upfield and out of the play. When tackles down block, he does a great job of using his hands to squeeze down blocks, making it difficult for QBs to read him or blockers to kick him out.
