This isn’t about me, but Ray is making me look good after I ranked him ahead of some talented players at bigger schools in our County Deep Dives series. So far, he has eight sacks in three games, including two last Friday in a 26-16 win over Fairmont. He’s causing plenty of havoc in the backfield, and last week he added a forced fumble and not one, but two blocked punts to his stat line.

After playing more off the ball a year ago and playing a large amount of offensive snaps, Ray is moving back to the position he plays best: edge rusher. His first step is fantastic and he’s able to bend around the edge or beat tackles inside, something you don’t often see from high school edge guys. Expect a big year from him, even if the way he impacts the game will look different than last season.

Ray played more off the ball last season and excelled as a running back, but he’s been unblockable as a hybrid edge rusher in the spring, so much so that I’m not sure he’ll stay off the ball for long. He’s explosive and compact as a pass-rusher and can win with both speed and power.
