Expert Analysis
Robert Davis | Prep Redzone Scout
Chavez emerged as a dependable presence in the secondary, recording 62 total tackles, one tackle for loss and an interception. He plays with urgency and shows the ability to move fluidly between roles in the defense. Chavez is effective coming downhill in the run game while also holding his own in coverage against slot receivers and tight ends. His awareness and ability to read the field allow him to arrive at the football quickly. That versatility, paired with consistent production, makes Chavez a rising safety prospect who should continue to gain attention as evaluations move into the offseason.

Chavez has very good athletic ability due to very good acceleration, speed, jumping, paired with good change of direction. Very good read and reaction speed. Smooth and controlled back pedal. Chavez ranges from his deep zone responsibility down to the box and excels in run support. Very good tackling and good strength to stop the ball carrier in their tracks. Chavez does a great job in both man and zone. Sticky like glue in man, with very good closing quickness. He does a great job creating pass breaks up and deflections. I believe his name will start gaining some traction over the off-season!

The FS/RB has 56 total tackles (30 solo, 24 assisted), 8 PD, 46 carries for 190 yards and 2 touchdowns, with 3 receptions for 25 yards. Chavez has very good athletic ability due to very good acceleration, speed, jumping, and good change of direction. He has a smooth and controlled back pedal with good read and reaction speed. Chavez has very good run support. He uses his good strength and very good tackling to make the play. Good angles when tackling. He’s aggressive, grabbing and dragging the ball carrier down. He is also very physical, creating incompletions. Very good range. He will chase to the other side of the field to make the play. This hard-hitting safety should be on a bunch of college’s radars for his performances.

Xavier Chavez took home Defensive Back MVP, standing out as the most consistent player in coverage throughout the day. Chavez’s speed and smooth movement allowed him to stay tight to receivers and transition seamlessly in and out of breaks. He excelled during one on ones, using physicality and recovery speed to contest passes. Showing versatility by playing both cornerback and safety, Chavez was a lockdown defender in 7 on 7 and will definitely be a prospect to know this summer and in the coming years.

Chavez didn’t see much varsity action this past season, but the tools are clearly there. He’s shown a willingness to step up in run support and deliver contact, traits that bode well as he transitions to a larger role. He reads the quarterback effectively and has flashed the ability to break on the ball and generate turnovers. With a full offseason ahead, expect Chavez to take strides physically and become a bigger part of his team’s defensive plans moving forward.
