Keontae McClay
About Keontae
Expert Analysis
Jordan Reyes | Prep Redzone Scout
McClay has been flying under the recruiting radar even since his initial offer from Northern Arizona in May. At 6’0” 175 lbs. he’s a competitor that plays well with his eyes and processes his reads quickly to get an early break on the ball. He sees the field and can anticipate to put himself in position to make explosive plays and be a difference maker on defense. Like his acceleration into his break to close space on the ball. Equally effective in both coverage and run support coming downhill from his safety position. Delivers solid contact and wraps up to the ground. Finished the 2023 season with 53 tackles, seven TFL, and four interceptions. Skillset and ability warrant more recruiting attention than what he’s got to date.

McClay picked up his first offer from NAU this month after a productive junior season in the Lincoln secondary with 4 INTs, 53 tackles, and 7 TFLs. He’s a savvy nickel/S that provides physical tackling around the perimeter and can make plays in both man and zone coverage. He uses his eyes effectively to read play development in zone, is quick to react downhill to screens/jet sweeps, and possesses the speed to get over the top when challenged vertically. McClay’s one of the more underrated senior DBs in San Diego heading into the 2024 season.
