Expert Analysis
Will Helms | Prep Redzone Scout
Mahaffey led all freshman tight ends last season with 27 catches and 367 yards as a receiver. While he made his biggest impact on the defensive side of the ball (and we have him ranked there) he’s going to continue to make an impact on offense as a reliable blocker and receiver. I like his game and think he’ll continue to thrive.

Playing both an H-Back role on offense and a freelancing linebacker on defense, Mahaffey excelled on both sides of the ball. He’s a legitimate two-way prospect with a physicality that you’d expect to see from bigger prospects, but not necessarily 170-pound freshmen. Another year or two in a high school weight program and local colleges will need to start recruiting him.

One of the most productive two-way freshmen in the state, Mchaffey caught six touchdowns as a tight end and made over 100 tackles at linebacker. Because of his height, his upside is probably higher at linebacker, but so far, he’s proved to be a matchup nightmare offensively as well. Those ball skills and ability to play in-line on offense help him to make plays in the middle on defense.
