Mertz is an attacking backer who I prefer as an on-ball backer where he can showcase his acceleration, lateral quickness and physicality to his game. He’ll be back to lead a strong backer crew and should be ultra productive this season.

Mertz does a good job shedding his blocker to make a play on the ball. He showcases good vision and patience and knows when to get small to blast through the line and make a play on the ball carrier. Mertz does a good job in run support and will take on a bigger lineman and not shy away from contact or physicality. He is best as a strong side backer but he isn’t lost in coverage. He has good footwork and will work his way back to cover his zone and doesn’t get lost in the secondary and has good vision to chase down a play as a coverage backer.

Mertz is an athletic prospect that plays the outside linebacker position in the Redhawk’s defense. Shows agility, body control, hips and coordination to play the position. Plays with initial quickness to read and react. Ability to move through traffic, strength to take on blocks and hand usage to find ball carriers in the run game. Lateral quickness to move across the LOS. Shows burst and hand usage as a blitz rusher. A sure tackler at the LOS and the open field. Mertz has the size and athleticism to play the MIKE linebacker position in a 4-3 or 3-4 defensive type scheme.
