Ed OBrien | Prep Redzone Scout
Johnson posted his mid-season highlights on Sep. 26. Through 10/9, he completed 50-of-80 passes for 574 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception. Early highlights show him completing many passes outside the numbers, as well as intermediate and deep throws. Shows good mobility in the pocket with the ability to escape pressure and still be able to complete passes downfield. Definitely extends plays with his legs. More throws of the shorter variety and in-between the numbers will give a more complete picture.

Johnson is a southpaw, dual-threat quarterback who likes to move the ball quickly. He’s also comfortable throwing passes on the move. He tends to go to his first read on several passes. I can’t really fault him for that, because the patterns being run are short (5-7 yards or less). There aren’t too many deep shots on film. He has one deep completed pass that shows his arm strength. Despite the ball hanging in the air a little bit, he gives the receiver a chance to make the play 40-plus yards downfield. Looks very comfortable in the shotgun and running plays involving play-action. As with everyone else in this article, the season is still early. So, I’ll take a wait-and-see approach with Johnson. I’d like to see him use his legs more often as a weapon.
