The only reason you probably haven’t heard more about Boyd so far this year is that he’s only gotten into the end zone twice in his first seven games. But that lack of overall scoring hasn’t stopped his effectiveness for a squad that is 6-1 and 1-0 in region play heading into a stretch where dog fights are now the norm.
Boyd has rushed for 493 yards and a score and added a couple of receptions for 13 yards and another touchdown in that span. He’s doing it in small chunks (his longest run of the year is 18 yards). His consistency is more important for a team with one of the best receivers in the state already capable of those home run plays.
Instead, the sophomore is being used almost exclusively between the tackles. It’s helping to wear down defenses, but also sucking them in to protect against the run while the Gators’ look for those big plays on the outside. Get used to seeing this play out for the next two years, too.
With all of the commotion taking place before, during and after River Bluff’s Homecoming-spoiling win over Midland Valley, leave it to the Gators’ sophomore running back to appear completely unbothered by it all.
Boyd was the steadying influence from start to finish, patiently finding openings and picking his spots on his way to a 101-yard performance.
Just as impressive as his patience was his strength. He fought his way through his fair share of contact and seemed to always fall forward, more than once to pick up drive-extending first downs.
