With the third week of playoff football finished it is time to highlight the weekend’s top performances. This week we have a good mix of repeat players as well as some who haven’t been on this list as of late. Let’s check out the players of the week for the third round of the playoffs.
Class 6A
Angelo Rankin Jr. Angelo Rankin Jr. 5'10" | ATH Edmond Santa Fe | 2021 State OK – Edmond Santa Fe
To start off we have one of my favorite players. Angelo Rankin has been billed as a do it all athlete on both sides of the ball and he lived up to that billing on Saturday night. Rankin finished the game with 35 yards and 2 touchdowns receiving, 7 tackles, and an interception. Rankin and the Wolves came out fired up to play Union on Saturday and will face off against Jenks this week for a shot at their first Gold Ball in school history.
Terrill Davis – Choctaw
In possibly the upset of the season, Choctaw’s top (healthy) WR had himself a great night with 97 yards and 2 touchdowns receiving as well as a touchdown rushing in the Yellow Jackets big win over Stillwater. Choctaw entered the season with high hopes and now has a chance at a state championship as they will matchup against Bixby for everything this week.
Braylin Presley Braylin Presley 5'9" | RB Bixby | 2022 State OK – Bixby
Braylin Presley Braylin Presley 5'9" | RB Bixby | 2022 State OK has set the state on fire this season. No team has been able to do anything more than contain him (somewhat), including Midwest City. Against the Bombers, Presley ran the ball 33 times for 286 yards and 4 touchdowns and added 56 yards receiving on 5 receptions as well. Presley and the Spartans have shown no signs of slowing down and will take on Choctaw for the state title this week.
Class 5A
Erik McCarty – McAlester
This may seem a little like deja vu, and as much as we like to spread the love here at Prep RedZone, I would be remised if I kept McCarty off this list just because he’s been on it seemingly every week of the playoffs. McCarty ran the ball 21 times for 181 yards and 5 touchdowns in the Buffaloes upset over El Reno. In total, McCarty now has 368 yards and 12 touchdowns since the playoffs have started and is avergaing 9.2 yards per carry. McAlester is one of the most dangerous teams across all classes right now and finds themselves in the semi-finals against Bishop McGuinness with a legit shot at the title game next week.
Buddy Bizzell Buddy Bizzell 6'1" | RB Carl Albert | 2022 State OK – Carl Albert
Carl Albert once again has rolled through the 5A bracket into the semi-finals and they have done so this season on the back of their veteran playmakers such as Buddy Bizzell Buddy Bizzell 6'1" | RB Carl Albert | 2022 State OK . Bizzell made plays all over the field in their win over Bishop Kelley with 3 rushing touchdowns, a blocked punt, and a fumble recovery. Carl Albert will take on Collinsville this week with their aim set on a 5th straight trip to Wantland.
Class 4A
Colby Langford – Blanchard
Blanchard had their first tough game of the playoffs against Bristow Friday night, but that did not stop their Senior QB from having a big night. Langford went for 158 yards and 3 touchdowns in the air and ran for 32 more yards on the ground. Blanchard will face Clinton in the semi-finals this week with the winner playing for state next week.
Class 3A
Max Brown Max Brown 6'2" | 200 lbs | QB Lincoln Christian | 2022 State OK – Lincoln Christian
Lincoln Christian’s offense has been one of the most potent in the state this season once again and a big reason for that has been the emergence of their QB Max Brown Max Brown 6'2" | 200 lbs | QB Lincoln Christian | 2022 State OK . Brown showed off his dual-threat ability in this one with 173 yards and a touchdown passing as well as 74 yards and 2 touchdowns rushing. Lincoln Christian lives on another week to defend their title and will face Heritage Hall in the semis this week.
Chase Hudson – Lincoln Christian
As stated above, Lincoln Christian had no problems on offense in their last game, especially in the rushing game. In addition to Brown’s night on the ground, their RB Chase Hudson had a nice night as well. Hudson finished the night with 88 yards and a monster 5 touchdowns on the ground as well as 47 yards receiving. Hudson will look to build on this performance against Heritage Hall this week.
Darren Manes – Stigler
Perhaps the best night passing last week came from Stigler’s QB. Darren Manes threw the ball 22 times for 308 yards and 6 touchdowns in Stigler’s beatdown of Kingston and also added 36 yards and a touchdown rushing. Stigler has gotten hot at the right time and will take on 3A #1 Holland Hall in the semi-finals this week.
Braden Drewry – Stigler
With Manes having the night he did passing last week, one of Stigler’s WRs was bound to have a huge night, and that was the case for Braden Drewry. Drewry only caught 3 passes, but he made the most out of them with 157 yards and 3 TDs. That’s right, all 3 of his catches resulted in scores. Talk about big play ability. Another performance like that from Drewry this week will go a long way for Stigler as they have the tall order of trying to score on a Holland Hall defense that has been stout all season.
Class 2A
Collin Matteson Collin Matteson 6'0" | 180 lbs | WR Oklahoma Christian School | 2022 State OK – Oklahoma Christian School
Once again Collin Matteson Collin Matteson 6'0" | 180 lbs | WR Oklahoma Christian School | 2022 State OK finds his way onto our players of the week list and rightly so. Collin caught 3 balls for 83 yards and a touchdown in OCS’ win over Community Christian and caught the game-sealing interception in the 4th quarter to send the Saints to the quarterfinals where they will play Eufala.
Emmit Wilk – Washington
In another shocking upset, Washington’s QB had himself a night in their 3rd round matchup against Jones. Wilk threw the ball for 113 yards and 2 touchdowns and ran the ball for 104 yards and another touchdown. The Warriors are rolling and will take on Adair this week in the quarterfinals.
Class A
Bryce Drummond Bryce Drummond 6'3" | QB Pawhuska | 2021 State OK – Pawhuska
Due to byes and cancellations, it has been a while since Pawhuska has played, but make no mistake, they did not miss a beat in their win over Warner. Their star QB Bryce Drummond Bryce Drummond 6'3" | QB Pawhuska | 2021 State OK in particular went 28-33 for 338 yards and 4 touchdowns passing and added a nice 31yards on the ground. Pawhuska is still on cruise control like many thought they’d be to this point, and will play Mooreland in the quarterfinals this week.
Lesharo Wildcat – Pawhuska
Drummond went off on offense, and Lesharo Wildcat and a few other Pawhuska defenders went off on the other side of the ball against Warner. Wildcat specifically recorded 17 tackles, 6 TFLs, 4 sacks, and recovered a fumble in Friday night’s beat down. With huge nights like this on defense paired with their record-setting offense, Pawhuska is looking virtually unstoppable right now.
Nate Lockert – Woodland
Our final player of the week for the third round is Woodland’s QB Nate Lockert. Lockert had a great all-around night against Gore with 208 yards rushing and 5 total touchdowns. Woodland is on quite the playoff run with their next stop coming in Cashion where they will take on the undefeated Wildcats in the quarterfinals.
