Continue ReadingThe Tales of the Tape Series is something new that I’m trying out as far as off-season content goes. Prospects have sent me their film in bulk since the conclusion of the 2022-2023 season. I will be sorting through the tape of the prospects that have entered their submissions, and I look forward to receiving more tape over the next few months. Tale of the Tape Evaluations will be performance based and kept concise in terms of length. I choose this format because most recruiters can tell a lot about prospects within that all-pivotal first 45 seconds of the tape. However, after I give their entire highlight a look, I will honestly asses what I see. With that being said, enjoy.
Noel Estrada
Noel Estrada
From watching Noel’s updated tape, I was able to set in stone what I already had previously assessed. Noel Estrada is a physical, old school linebacker with a nice frame that loves to run. He reads well and reacts even better when attempting to gauge what the offensive front is giving him. Estrada is a sure tackler that runs the alley seamlessly to make plays on ball carriers. His ability to effectively disrupt offenses when sent on blitzes was the part of his game that stood out the most. Noel is a natural hunter that is adept at locating the football in traffic, while in motion, to stifle ball-carriers. This kid will have a monster of a Junior year if he continues to improve, for sure.

Rashayd McGruder Rashayd McGruder 6’0″ | 175 lbs | DB Laurel | 2024 State MS impressed me with his tape submission. The 2024 defensive back has great feet, loose hips, and decent ball skills. He runs a 4.5 40, and it translates well to the field. His reactionary skills, body control, and athleticism stood out. Those attributes help him stay in phase and prevent the receivers he faced from getting on top of his toes. McGruder is a cover corner for sure; he is not overly physical by any means. Don’t let that sentiment fool you though. He is willing and capable to assist in run support. I can see Rashayd excelling on the field this coming fall as well as on the next level. Be on the lookout for him this fall.
Mr.McGee is one of my All-Trench Team honorees from this past year, so it was an honor to re-evaluate his tape. Angel McGee Angel McGee 6’0″ | 275 lbs | DL Gautier | 2023 State MS is a state championship power lifter, and it shows through his play between the lines. Angel has a great get off, and plays with great leverage. At the point of attack, he is physically imposing to his opponents due to his speed. Twitchy! Yes I said it. This kid has a ton of twitch and he can move extremely well to be an interior defensive lineman. The most salient skill that Angel displayed was how he processes the game to make plays. As athletically gifted as he is, it seems as if the game is slowed down for him. That skill-set along with his physical attributes are a combination that breeds success. Look for Angel McGee Angel McGee 6’0″ | 275 lbs | DL Gautier | 2023 State MS to follow up his 134 tackle Junior season with an even more impressive Senior year.
Artez McCrary
Artez McCrary
Mr.McCrary is a cover corner out of the 2024 class that has potential. Artez McCrary is a disciplined, well coached football player that makes the right plays! His film didn’t just dazzle me, but there were a few bright spots that I want to point out from what I saw. As far as technique goes, Artez was efficient and effective in terms of coverage on the backend. His hands and feet work nicely together to keep receivers in front, whether it is at the line or down the field. McCrary has the awareness and athleticism to sit on top of receivers routes and redirect with them to stay in phase. Overall, Artez is a solid Defensive Back. If he can add a little weight and gain strength over the off-season, his game will increase exponentially.
Justin Murry Justin Murry 6’0″ | 290 lbs | OL Leflore County | 2024 State MS is an offensive lineman that is slightly undersized, but he makes up for his stature by playing with grit. Murry is a adequate athlete that moves his compact build pretty well at 290. He has strong hands and a strong core that allow him an advantage over most opponents he has faced. Justin has tape at Center and Guard, and he looks comfortable playing in both spots. I would like to see Justin play with more technique. If he plays with that same type of intensity and passion while becoming more technically sound, Justin could be a problem.
