Today we take a look at Sumter’s senior group.
They were 10-1 last year with their only loss coming to Gaffney in the playoffs. Their head coach is Mark Barnes and they have started 2020 off with a 3-0 record.
The defensive side of the ball boasts three major prospects and their top prospects led by DE Justus Boone Justus Boone 6'5" | 250 lbs | DL Sumter | 2021 State SC (6’5, 250) who totaled 54 tackles, 16 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks, and 11 hurries in 2019. Boone is leading the team early on in 2020 and appears headed for a monster year. Boone is our #2 overall prospect and #2 defensive lineman in South Carolina. He is committed to Florida and chose the Gators over offers from many other SEC and ACC programs.
The second highest rated prospect is DE Miles Capers Miles Capers 6'5" | 220 lbs | DL Sumter | 2021 State SC (6’5, 220) who is not committed but has offers from Big Ten schools such as Illinois and Indiana, Mississippi State, Kansas, App State, Charlotte, and many others. Capers tallied 19 tackles, three tackles for loss, and one sack in 2019 showing tremendous upside. He brings length, size, range, and the frame to fill out and be a big time college player. He is still raw and will need time to development but the upside is huge here. We have him rated #22 overall and #6 defensive lineman in the state.
They have another star on defense in LB Deshawn McKnight Deshawn McKnight 6'2" | 215 lbs | LB Sumter | 2021 State SC (6’2, 215) who is committed to Appalachian State. McKnight had 51 tackles, seven tackles for loss, and two sacks in 2019 and is playing both sides of the ball in 2020. On tape he is good inside the box and has the range to go sideline to sideline. Most coaches believe his better days are ahead of him as he should only get better and has the tools that D1 coaches are looking for. He is our #1 linebacker and #25 overall prospect in the state.
Sumter’s offense has two skill players and a quarterback on the list of college prospects.
QB Hayden Vasquez Hayden Vasquez 5'11" | 185 lbs | QB Sumter | 2021 State SC (5’11, 184) is short but he is a solid passer who completed 62.1% of his passes in 2019 with 1,764 yards and a 17-7 ratio. He is not playing as well in 2020 so he may not attract D1 offers but he should get some D2 and D3 interest. He currently has no reported offers and is our #158 overall prospect in the state.
RB Nathan Harris-Waynick Nathan Harris-Waynick 5'10" | 210 lbs | RB Sumter | 2021 State SC (5’10, 210) is not committed and has no reported offers yet but he is a very good player who is following up 2019 with a solid 2020 season as well. He is averaging over 130 yards per game in 2020 and led the team with 931 yard and 23 touchdowns in 2019. He currently has no offers but should soon. We have him rated as the #73 overall prospect and #7 running back in the state.
Last, but not least, is WR Marcus Lane Marcus Lane 5'8" | 170 lbs | WR Sumter | 2021 State SC (5’8, 170) led the team with 40 catches for 629 yards and four touchdowns in 2019. He is a big play slot receiver who averaged almost 16 per catch. They use him in the slot and in the backfield on sweeps and reverses. Lane is explosive and quick but also willing to block, despite being a smaller target. He is the #6 wide receiver and #68 overall prospect in the state but expect him to rise before signing day.
