This meeting marked the 36th match-up between Mississippi & Alabama, in a rivalry that Alabama has mostly dominated. Though we lost a 14-10 defensive battle, I was pleased with how the collective of our best players from the state preformed in the contest. It was a game that produced as many turnovers as touchdowns, so both sides came ready to play defensively. A lone field goal accounted for the only points through two quarters, as Alabama trailed 3-0 going into the half. The Mississippi All-Stars lead and controlled the game for 3 quarters. However, a strong 4th quarter push granted Alabama 2 touchdowns and a late lead to secure the win. Mississippi fell to 11-25 all time in the game’s history, but as we all know, each of these participants are ultimately winners for earning the honor to compete for their state. The majority of these student-athletes will continue on their careers at a variation of programs, so you’ll hear their names again. Below I will be featuring a few key names that stood out to me over the course of the game while spectating.
Jeleel Fleming | Vicksburg | FS | Uncommitted
Jeleel Fleming had himself a day defensively last weekend. It was the type of performance that I’m sure he was hoping for with his recruitment still being open-ended. The 2023 safety found ways to get around the ball and make plays in the defensive secondary consistently for the Mississippi All-Stars. Fleming is a long and rangy prospect that has loads of potential based on his frame and size. Don’t get it twisted though, the necessary athleticism and ball skills are there! At 6’3 190lbs Fleming is a big safety, but he plays with the grace and agility of a 5’11 or 6’0 prospect. Jeleel impressed me most last weekend with his reactionary timing and how quick his processor was. On the day, Fleming totaled an interception, a fumble recovery, a pass break-up, and two tackles. This type of performance showcased Jeleel’s strengths and abilities as a defender. Not only that, it showed how well he can perform each responsibility of the position he plays, which is vital in recruitment. He has made plays all year, but to do it on that stage is monumental. Fleming was a half step away from having a two interception game folks. This kid is going to need a bit of grooming when it comes to the small intricacies of playing in the back end on the next level, but if he falls into the right hands then the suitor will have them a dawg!
Suntarine Perkins Suntarine Perkins 6'1" | 190 lbs | ATH Raleigh | 2023 State MS | Raleigh | LB/RB | Ole Miss Commit
If you haven’t heard the name Suntarine “Get” Perkins then there is no way that you have been following Mississippi football for the past year and a half. The 3A Mr. Football honoree showed everyone exactly why there is so much hype surrounding his name all year long! The senior out of Raleigh is one of the more college-ready recruits I have seen out of this class. Though Perkins is already committed to attend Ole Miss to further his career, he rounded out his senior campaign impressing us with stellar performances. Suntarine was able to show off his athleticism and play-making ability for the Mississippi All-Star’s defense. He totaled 10 tackles, 9 of which were solo, and 3 tackles for loss. I enjoyed watching Suntarine read, assess, and simply make plays like he has done all year long, but this time against more formidable opponents. He is surely a sideline to sideline linebacker; there aren’t many plays that Suntarine fails to make defensively. He works well in coverage, he’s a sure run stopper, and he pursues the ball with a fervor that is beautiful to watch. Perkins also received a handful of offensive snaps in the game as well. Perkins was awarded MVP for Mississippi’s All-Stars to go along with the MVP trophy from the 3A state title game. This kid is going to be a force for Ole Miss in the coming years, book it!
D’Mariun Perteet D’Mariun Perteet 5'10" | 200 lbs | RB South Panola | 2023 State MS | South Panola | RB | Uncommitted
Mr. Perteet put up the only touchdown for Mississippi last weekend in a performance where he had to earn every yard he gained. D’Mariun Perteet D’Mariun Perteet 5'10" | 200 lbs | RB South Panola | 2023 State MS is a running-back out of Mississippi’s most storied programs, South Panola. Perteet is a 3-star prospect that stands just over 5’10 and weighs 215lbs. He is compactly built and he uses his frame to run through arm tackles on a consistent basis. D’Mariun knows how to get behind his pads to earn the tough yards, but if he gets to the edge he turns on the jets and uses that 4.5 40 speed to make things happen. He showed exactly what I just mentioned with his 52 yard touchdown run in last weeks game to extend the Mississippi All-Star’s lead. I can see Perteet becoming a three down back in the near future. He has the frame, ability, and the strength to be an early contributor depending on where he signs. Recently he has earned an offer from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. He is committed to Northwest Community College as of now, but we will see where he lands! Look for D’Mariun to be at a Division 1 Program in 2 years if not next year.
Isaiah Spencer Isaiah Spencer 6'1" | 180 lbs | WR Madison Central | 2023 State MS | Madison Central | WR | Uncommitted
The wide-out group for the Mississippi All-Stars weren’t all able to showcase their talents how they normally would, simply due to the nature of the game last weekend. This did not stop Isaiah Spencer Isaiah Spencer 6'1" | 180 lbs | WR Madison Central | 2023 State MS from leaving his mark on the game. The former Southern Miss commit was able make a reception that showed off his pass-catching ability along with his run after catch factor. Naturally, these two things are paramount to any receiver attaining success. Furthermore, I was more intrigued by his unselfish nature and and willingness to block out wide. It takes a different breed of an athlete to block for your teammates when you’re not being targeted as much as normal. Especially in this day and age. Look for big things from Isaiah Spencer Isaiah Spencer 6'1" | 180 lbs | WR Madison Central | 2023 State MS on the next level. He is one of our own that I’m waiting to see sign and then later on shine!
Ayden Williams Ayden Williams 6'1" | 175 lbs | WR Ridgeland | 2023 State MS | Ridgeland | WR | Ole Miss Commit
Ayden Williams Ayden Williams 6'1" | 175 lbs | WR Ridgeland | 2023 State MS is a 4 Star Recruit and an Under Armor All-American out of the 2023 class that deserves every bit of the notoriety that he receives. The 6’3 195lb wide-receiver moves like a gazelle being preyed on by a lion. Williams didn’t have a monster of a game, but he showed a glimpse of what Coach Kiffin and the Ole Miss Rebel’s Offense has to look forward to in the future. His single reception was for 43 yards on a 50/50 ball that moved the Mississippi All-Stars closer to the green zone. Though they weren’t able to capitalize on Williams reception, it was one of the longest plays from scrimmage for Mississippi. Ayden’s ability to burst, stop, and then explode out of his breaks is next level. At times his routes are a bit overzealous, but his feet are never tangled and his hands are as sure as they come. With his frame and athleticism, this kid could be playing on Sunday’s one day. Ole Miss is handling business in when it comes to guarding their best recruits out of the 2023 class. The Rebels are getting yet, another prospect who is ready to contribute to their cause right now!
