And the chances are likely again to see them soar to the top once again. It’s time to preview the very first SCISA 4A state title bout on Friday between Hammond and Laurence Manning.
The Skyhawks have flown past their SCISA competition in 2022, defeating all conference opponents by 30 points or more and coming close to unseating SCHSL 5A power Gaffney in a 14-7 defeat. The closest any SCISA squad has come to slaying the Skyhawks was Laurence Manning back in early September, and even that was a decisive 37-6 win. But Hammond knows how difficult it could be to take down the same team twice in one season. And the Swampcats will be itching for the opportunity to bring the champs down. Laurence Manning survived through two tight playoff contests, including a 28-27 thriller over Trinity Collegiate to earn another shot at the kings. It will take a special effort from quarterback Tyler June, who has proved his clutch abilities both as a passer and a runner. But few teams have been able to solve the Skyhawks’ stout defense that surrendered just 14 combined points over its last five games. Junior Bryson Hodge will need to be an impact player defensively for Mannning, racking up six sacks throughout the season with his strength and footwork on the line. The Swampcats will need to break through with a few early stops or game-flipping turnovers to steal away the momentum and would love a few extended drives on the ground from June and Bryson Smith. Expect a strong effort from the underdogs on Friday night, but the Skyhawks should strike quickly and ride their potent defense to a sixth state title in a row.
