5A: Round 2 Winners

<!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The second round of the playoffs featured five of our top ten teams being upset. These four programs got the win when no one thought they could and now advance to the quarterfinals of the 2022 high school playoffs.&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>Alta Hawks</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The Hawks stunned last year's state runner-up, the Springville Red Devils, in a thrilling second-round upset. Alta came out ready to play and jumped out to a 31-0 halftime lead as they dominated both sides of the ball. However, Springville and their potent offense would respond, scoring 27 points in the second half. But it wasn't enough as the Hawks held on for the incredible win. Alta signal caller Matt McKea tossed three touchdowns as the Hawks soared to the quarterfinals.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>Olympus Titans&nbsp;</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The Titans had already lost to the Bengals earlier in the season, 28-17, so many wondered if they could be the team to knock off Brighton. After all, the Bengals hadn't lost a game since week one of the high school season, but that would all change in round two. Brighton and Olympus entered the fourth quarter tied at 14, but two late touchdowns from running back Nic Brown and quarterback Chase Moseley were enough to help Olympus get the upset win 28-20. Defensive linemen [player_tooltip player_id='406882' first='Abraham' last='Johnson'] and the Titan's defense dominated the second half shutting out the Tiger's offense.&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>Wasatch Wasps</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>It was a shootout in Spanish Fork, with the Wasps and Dons trading points in a high-scoring showdown. The game was tied at seven after the first quarter, with the Wasps pulling ahead 28-21 at the half. A long touchdown run by Spanish Fork running back Teni Worthen allows the Dons to tie the game at 35. Spanish Fork would take the lead after scoring in the opening minutes of the 4th quarter. With their season on the line, Wasatch reposed, closing the game on a 14-0 run to win 49-42. Wasps quarterback Mack Keldon tossed four touchdowns, with two of them being hauled in by receiver Crew Erickson.&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>Orem Tigers</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Last year the Tigers went into Bountiful and got a road playoff win, but could they do it again? The Redhawks jumped out to a 14-7 lead in the first quarter and would remain in front going into the fourth. But, with the Tigers' backs against the walls, they fought their way back and exploded for 21 points in the fourth quarter to take the round two showdown 35-25. Orem quarterback Lance Reynolds was sensational with his arm and legs, scoring a touchdown with each. In addition, the Orem defense allowed 11 points after the first quarter in an outstanding performance that allowed the Tigers to advance.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph -->
