There are three state-championship caliber teams in this league and three teams that can beat anybody in the state, with the odd team out being a great program with a bounty of young talent. Now, here’s a short report on the Catholic Central League!
Current Standings
Catholic Central 4-1 (1-0)
This team looks dangerous and is a legitimate State Championship contender. With wins against Davison, DeWitt, Brother Rice, and a close loss against Chippewa Valley, this team has had a grueling schedule and has made the most of it. I love how balanced this team is, with stars on both sides of the ball, including Spencer Lyons Spencer Lyons 6'2" | 215 lbs | ATH State MI , Brayden Courser Brayden Courser 6'1" | 215 lbs | LB Detroit Catholic Central | 2023 State MI , Brady Blakita, and Baechler Houser. This Week’s matchup against De La Salle could be legendary.
Brother Rice 2-3 (1-1)
Upon first glance, you’d think it’s a down year for Brother Rice, but that’s the furthest thing from the truth. In reality, they have an incredible win against De La Salle, a blowout win against Woodhaven, 1-possession losses against Catholic Central and East Kentwood, with a 2-score loss to Dakota as they were without Nolan Ray Nolan Ray 6'0" | 195 lbs | RB Brother Rice | 2023 State MI . The Quarterback position was the biggest question mark heading into the season, and overall it seems that they’ve figured it out. If this team can make the playoffs, which they should, they are a state championship contender.
De La Salle 4-1 (1-1)
Trying to defend their 2021 state title, De La Salle has been the most dominant team in the Catholic League, despite a hiccup against Brother Rice, and currently sitting at 3rd place. Brady Drogosh Brady Drogosh 6'5" | 205 lbs | QB De La Salle | 2023 State MI and his offensive weapons are nearly unstoppable, with an incredible offensive line, having not scored less than 41 points in a game all season. In addition to their offensive talent, I truly believe that Mason Muragin Mason Muragin 6'4" | 245 lbs | DL De La Salle | 2023 State MI is an underrated gem who will ball out at Illinois and be a college football star in the coming years. This team has two more big tests with Catholic Central and River Rouge, so let’s see if they can make the most of those opportunities.
Orchard Lake St. Mary’s 1-4 (0-1)
OLSM hasn’t looked great this season, but to be fair, they so have a grueling schedule like the rest of the Catholic Central. Though their 1 win has come against a struggling Hudsonville team, and they haven’t been competitive against any of the sensational teams they’ve faced. They have a bounty of young talent, so we’ll have to see if they can make the most out of the 2023 season because I don’t think playoffs are likely.
