August Recruiting Update
While Prep Redzone exists to highlight unknown prospects, we also cover some recruiting here and there. This past month has been one of the busiest of the year when it comes to both commitments and offers. Each month we’ll update commitments, offers and commitment timetables.
Commitments
A pair of top wide receivers from Charlotte announced commitments on Wednesday. First Myers Park receiver Jordan Bly Jordan Bly 5'10" | 148 lbs | WR Myers Park | 2021 State NC announced his intentions to play for Old Dominion, then Mallard Creek wideout Coleman Jeffcoat Coleman Jeffcoat 6'3" | 205 lbs | WR Mallard Creek | 2021 State NC committed to Temple. Both of these are massive gets for their respected schools, as the 39th overall prospect in the state, Jeffcoat is now our highest-ranked Group of Five commit. Statesville receive Jasaiah Gathings Jasaiah Gathings 6'1" | 180 lbs | WR Statesville | 2021 State NC recently committed to Akron.
The biggest commitment of the week came in the form of a flip by West Forsyth offensive lineman Jared Wilson Jared Wilson 6'3" | 345 lbs | OL West Forsyth | 2021 State NC . The 6’3″, 345-pounder decommitted from North Carolina and committed to Georgia, all at once.
Several North Carolina products have announced commitments to FCS schools recently. Anson receiver RJ Jackson committed recently to Campbell and Pinecrest tight end Braxton Barber Braxton Barber 6'4" | 220 lbs | TE Pinecrest | 2021 State NC chose Davidson. Havelock’s Marcus Gatling Marcus Gatling 5'11" | 200 lbs | LB Havelock | 2021 State NC received a recent offer from Wofford and committed to the Terriers shortly after.
Weddington defensive back Bryson Parker Bryson Parker 5'10" | 180 lbs | DB Weddington | 2021 State NC committed to Richmond over several Group of Five teams and Hough receiver Coen Sutton announced his intentions to play for App State. Finally, our top defensive lineman, Payton Page Payton Page 6'5" | 315 lbs | DL Dudley | 2021 NC out of Dudley, announced his commitment to Clemson. 15 of our top 18 players are committed to ACC schools.
So far, 75 of our top 200 are committed. North Carolina leads the way with 13 commitments, followed by NC State (7), Tennessee (4), Duke (4) and Charlotte (4).
Offers
2022 receiver Shaleak Knotts Shaleak Knotts 6'2" | 175 lbs | WR Monroe | 2022 State NC has received a number of recent scholarship offers from teams like Arkansas and South Carolina. 2023 Hough quarterback Tad Hudson also received an offer from the Gamecocks recently.
Several Weddington players received recent scholarship offers, including Jalen Newman Jalen Newman 5'11" | 175 lbs | DB Weddington | 2021 State NC (Charlotte), Ethan Schwartz (Bowdoin) and Joe Zovistoski Joe Zovistoski 6'1" | 190 lbs | DL Weddington | 2021 State NC (Valparaiso). Fellow Union County product Gavin Thomas Gavin Thomas 6'7" | 240 lbs | DL Cuthbertson | 2021 State NC received official offer letters from North Carolina Central and The Citadel.
Leesville Road tight end Nic Jones Nic Jones 6'5" | 255 lbs | TE Leesville Road | 2021 State NC is on a roll, securing his first four offers in the last three weeks, all from high-academic schools. Similarly, Providence Day receiver Thomas Flynn received his first two offers — Dayton and Butler — and seems to be picking up steam on the recruiting trail. Lastly, our top kicker, Pinecrest’s Jeff Yurk Jeff Yurk 6'2" | 195 lbs | K Pinecrest | 2021 State NC , received a scholarship offer to Elon.
