And not just in the Region VI-4A standings.
We’re already putting together a short list of potential player of the year candidates on both sides of the ball. Some of these following eight players have strong resumes while others are moving into key spots that typically bode well for production.
To avoid any favoritism – you know beyond this list of expectations – we listed them alphabetically.
OFFENSE
J’Shawn Anderson J’Shawn Anderson 6'0" | 185 lbs | RB Hartsville | 2023 State SC , RB, Hartsville
The rising senior (pictured) is one of those players who the rest of the region will be happy when his senior year is over. That’s because he’s been a huge part of the Red Foxes’ offense for two seasons already, including last year’s 1,152-yard, 15-touchdown campaign.
Darren Lloyd, RB, West Florence
Lloyd is the next man up on an offense that featured Terry McKithen (1,815 yards, 28 touchdowns) last year. Jody Jenerette loves power football, and after Lloyd was the team’s back-up tailback last year, his number will be called plenty this fall.
Carmello McDaniel Carmello McDaniel 5'8" | 175 lbs | RB Hartsville | 2024 State SC , RB, Hartsville
The younger of the two Hartsville tailbacks, the junior eclipsed his backfield mate last season by going over 1,300 rushing yards and putting up 21 touchdowns. When you start picking up SEC offers, yeah, there’s a good chance you could be a high school POY.
LaNorris Sellers LaNorris Sellers 6'3" | 215 lbs | QB South Florence | 2023 State SC , QB, South Florence
Sellers was probably the front-runner for the region’s offensive honors last season before he went down with a shoulder injury that sidelined him for the rest of the year. He’s healthy and as strong as ever, meaning the game-planning against him has already begun.
DEFENSE
Jaquez Coe, LB, Hartsville
Coe put up 36 total tackles a year ago in what was basically his dry run. In 2022, Coe is almost certainly going to pick up some of the slack left by Alex Hunt’s departure. Hunt led the way last season with 82.5 total tackles. Now, Coe could be in store for some big numbers.
Jaylin William Davis Jaylin William Davis 5'11" | 220 lbs | LB South Florence | 2023 State SC , LB, South Florence
The slightly bigger of South Florence’s two monster returning linebackers, Davis (5-foot-11, 220 pounds) is coming off a tremendous junior season in which he had 60.5 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, six sacks, a pick and a fumble recovery.
Trokel Prew Trokel Prew 5'8" | 185 lbs | LB South Florence | 2023 State SC , LB, South Florence
At 5-foot-8 and 185 pounds, Prew has already proved how valuable his quickness can impact the Bruins. Last season, he put up 11 tackles for loss and five sacks alongside 61 total stops. Prew and Davis will each be tasked with padding the blow from Eric Cooper’s graduation.
Cam Ward Cam Ward 5'4" | 170 lbs | LB Myrtle Beach | 2023 State SC , LB, Myrtle Beach
The spark plug of a linebacker was missed during a hefty portion of last year after re-breaking an arm. But the moment he was cleared, there was Ward, again making plays. He finished his abbreviated junior season with 27.5 tackles and 12.5 for loss.
