Marshall wins Football University Team of the Week
Marshall is the Football University Team of the Week after winning nearly 60 percent of the fan voting in Week 5.
The Tigers maintained their perfect record with a 34-13 win over Waseca, which also entered the contest with a 4-0 mark. Marshall never trailed, taking an early 14-0 lead on two Jefferson Lee V touchdown runs.
Quarterback Trey Lance paced the Tigers with 98 yards and two scores on the ground, along with 117 yards passing and a touchdown through the air. The North Dakota State University-commit also added 11 tackles on defense.
Coach Terry Bahlmann said via email that he was most impressed with the way his defense battled a tough Bluejays offense.
“Our defense ran to the ball well,” Bahlmann said. “Holding their offense to 13 points was a good effort.”
After four blowouts to begin 2017, last week’s game was the first that Marshall’s starters played in the second half. Bahlmann said playing a full 48 minutes was good for his team, and added that Waseca exploited some weaknesses that need to be addressed down the stretch.
“I think we can improve in all areas — we had a couple of penalties and turnovers that we need to take care of,” Bahlmann said.
South St. Paul finished second in the Week 5 voting. The Packers upset victory over Mahtomedi earned them almost 22 percent of fans’ votes.
