Merkwan was the big play, deep ball guy for The Governors. He has great speed and acceleration to get to full speed quickly and outrun his defender on each play. He had the agility and vision to extend those big plays and really boost his YAC. He also has the power to run through defenders if he can’t outrun or juke them out. He is a screen threat with all those attributes, can turn a minimal gain into a huge gain and a score if the defense doesn’t swarm him. I would like to see more variety of routes ran on tape, see what he can do with shorter routes, rather than just the home-run plays every play.
Tyler Sohler Tyler Sohler 6'0" | 175 lbs | WR Yankton | 2023 State – Yankton
Sohler seemed like the kid to get moved around to get him the mismatches to exploit in the defense. Split out wide or in the slot, he can gash for a big one and quite possibly, six points. He gets off the ball quick and gets up to speed instantly, usually too quick. Once his hands are on the ball, he is extremely difficult to contain and bring down. He gets behind the defense quick, or finds the soft spot in it and makes a good target for his QB to find and give an easy completion. He also has great concentration in traffic. He is a good one-cut runner in space to shake off one defender and extend plays. He is pretty well-rounded as a WR which makes it hard to find something to work on.
Easton Ogle Easton Ogle 5'11" | 175 lbs | WR RC St. Thomas More | 2023 State – Rapid City Stevens
Ogle is another well-rounded WR. His first step gets him in prime position to create separation for him off the ball. He has good speed, agility and vision to be a playmaker once he has the ball. He has good concentration to catch the ball with a defender draped all over him. He runs pretty good routes, uses his speed to get the separation he needs to make the catch. He does a good job getting himself open and putting himself in position for the pressured QB to find him for a big play. I would like to see him be a little more physical running with the ball, along with not trying to be too shifty once he has the ball and trying to make a play.
Carter Van Donge Carter Van Donge 5'11" | 165 lbs | WR Sioux Falls Christian | 2023 State – Sioux Falls Christian
Van Donge is one of the biggest speedsters in this class. His first two steps off the snap get him in space to make him a good target for the QB. He does a good job going up and high-pointing the ball in traffic and the attitude to pull the ball in and away from defenders. He does a good job moving around and getting himself open, especially when the QB is under pressure. He has pretty good agility to extend plays and boost his YAC. I would like to see him run more precise routes. With his speed, a precise route will get him ridiculously wide open and really get him some big plays in the pass game. Also would like to see him be more physical when carrying the ball, falling forward instead of getting pulled back.
Payton Bodine Payton Bodine 6'1" | 195 lbs | WR Velva | 2023 State – Velva
Bodine is a good possession receiver. He gets himself open and makes a good target for the QB and makes sure he’s coming down with the football. He is a good route runner and gains his separation with it and his speed. He is a smooth runner that has the sneaky kind of speed to run past defenders if they don’t take him seriously. He has good strength, balance and agility to extend plays by either fighting off defenders, changing directions and juking them out as well. He has great focus on the ball when defenders are close by and goes after the ball to fight through to come down with it.
Robert Hutchinson Robert Hutchinson WR SF Jefferson | 2023 State – Sioux Falls Jefferson
Hutchinson is a good secret weapon for the Cavaliers. He has good speed off the snap and runs good routes for separation. He is good at finding the soft spot in the defense and moving with the play to keep himself as a good target for the QB. He has good agility and playmaking skills once he has the football to really make the most out of his touches. He blocks well for the run game, which leads to the deception in some pass plays for the home-run ball. I would like to see him square up the ball better when reeling in passes, especially when high-pointing the ball.
Logan Winckler Logan Winckler WR Bon Homme | 2023 State – Bon Homme
Winckler stood out in many ways in the Bon Homme offense, because he was used in many ways. I liked how he was really methodical in everything he did. When he ran routes, he was technically sound from head to toe to be as efficient and crisp as possible. When has the football, he is very discrete with his cuts and puts emphasis on his planting and does a great job getting from point A to point B as soon as possible. He is also very physical like a RB when he runs the ball, he will stretch perimeter runs, plant his foot and get North and South to gain the most ground possible, running through any defenders in his way. I would like to see him not dance so much when he catches the ball and gain more ground in the pass game.
