Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the NCAA has instituted a dead period in recruiting, which basically makes it all virtual and over the phone with calls and social media. Some athletes may have gotten the chance to visit a college campus, but others are going remotely with their recruiting up to this period.
Despite that, many of Colorado’s top recruits are already garnering attention from major schools or even making a commitment to play at the next level. These are the latest on five of the top prospects from the Class of 2021 who have announced their commitment to play at the next level.
Sam Hart Sam Hart 6'5" | TE Cherokee Trail | 2021 State CO , TE, Cherokee Trail: Ohio State commit
Three of the top 10 prospects on the Prep Redzone Colorado ranking board are tight ends. Hart, the top prospect currently in the state, made his future plans official before 2020 even started as he shared his commitment to play at Ohio State. Hart led Cherokee Trail with 31 receptions, 562 receiving yards and 7 touchdowns in 2019.
Trey Zuhn Trey Zuhn 6'6" | OL Fossil Ridge | 2021 State CO , OL, Fossil Ridge: Texas A&M commit
The top offensive lineman and second highest prospect in the state, Zuhn had plenty of suitors. In the end, he will play in the SEC with Texas A&M. He also made an early commitment with his announcement coming back in February. Zuhn has great size standing 6-foot-6 and weighing 295 pounds. In a state that has boasted a number of solid offensive linemen that go on to the next level, Zuhn hopes to join that list with an SEC program.
Jake Rubley Jake Rubley 6'3" | QB Highlands Ranch | 2021 State CO , QB, Highlands Ranch: Kansas State commit
Yet another top prospect who made an early commit. Rubley, No. 3 in our rankings, announced his commitment to Kansas State on Jan. 1 on social media and follows a steady list of Colorado prospects to head to become a Wildcat. Rubley’s strong arm saw him finish with 1,767 passing yards and a 60 percent completion rate to become the top quarterback prospect in the state. He hopes to build off of his success this fall.
Terrance Ferguson Terrance Ferguson 6'5" | TE Heritage | 2021 State CO , TE, Heritage: Oregon commit
This makes it the top four recruits who have announced a commitment to play at the next level. Ferguson, currently the second-highest ranked tight end and No. 4 in the state, made his announcement last week on TV and selected Oregon as his future program. His other four options were all teams at the BCS level, so plenty of big names came calling. In the end, it was the Ducks who landed Ferguson after he finished his junior season with 54 receptions, 929 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns.
Beau Freyler Beau Freyler 6'2" | DB Pine Creek | 2021 State CO , DB, Pine Creek: Iowa State commit
The second commit to head to the Big 12, Freyler has been a key piece for the Class 4A powerhouse Pine Creek Eagles and ended up on Iowa State’s radar early. He rewarded the Cyclones with a commitment announced in early May to the school. Freyler, the No. 6 prospect per the Prep Redzone Colorado rankings, had a big season in the secondary with 73 tackles and 3 interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown. His play helped Pine Creek defeat Broomfield in the Class 4A state championship game last December.
