Continue ReadingThe New Mexico High School Coaches Association will hold two all-star football games Saturday at the Wool Bowl in Roswell. The small school game (Classes 2A and 3A) kicks off at noon. The big school game (Classes 4A, 5A and 6A) kicks off at 3 p.m. The players reported to the Wool Bowl early Thursday afternoon. The first practices was Thursday (2:30-4:30 pm). Two more practices are set for Friday (9-11:30 a.m. and 1:30-3:30 pm) and one on Saturday (9:30-10:30 am) for the big schools.
Here’s the breakdown of the roster for the Red Team in the Big Schools Game:
RED TEAM:
Quarterback: Ian Lopez Ian Lopez QB Centennial | 2022 State NM (Centennial); Daniel Ayala Daniel Ayala 6'0" | 190 lbs | QB West Mesa | 2022 State NM (West Mesa).
Lopez is another dynamic dual threat QB and is a major reason Centennial won its district title this season. West Mesa probably didn’t enjoy the season they thought they would but Ayala had a solid campaign with 1,230 passing yards and 411 rushing yards. College football is in his future.
Running Back: Jose Montoya Jose Montoya 5'8" | RB Mayfield | 2022 State NM (Mayfield); Bracxton Hall (Ruidoso); Aidan St. John Aidan St. John 6'1" | 195 lbs | RB Eldorado | 2022 State NM (Eldorado).
Montoya was one-half of Mayfield’s outstanding RB duo with Calvin Cox Calvin Cox 5'9" | 185 lbs | RB Mayfield | 2022 State NM . Hall finished with 1,503 rushing yards for the Class 4A runner-up Warriors. St. John powered Eldorado’s running game with 1,136 yards and 10 TD on the ground.
Wide Receiver/Tight End: Kaden Valdez Kaden Valdez 5'11" | 175 lbs | WR Volcano Vista | 2022 State NM (Volcano Vista); Cameron Sowards (Mayfield); Isaac Hinson Isaac Hinson 6'0" | 185 lbs | WR Lovington | 2022 State NM (Lovington); Diego Nunez (Goddard); Chance Carrillo Chance Carrillo 5'3" | WR Farmington | 2022 State NM (Farmington); Seth Chavez (Centennial).
Valdez was Volcano Vista’s primary receiving weapon, catching 62 passes for 1,286 yards and 12 TD. Hinson was stellar on both sides the ball, earning him serious consideration as the state’s top two-way player. Carrillo and QB Brandon Furbee Brandon Furbee 6'3" | QB Farmington | 2022 State NM were a lethal WR-QB combination. Same for Chavez and QB Ian Lopez Ian Lopez QB Centennial | 2022 State NM .
Offensive Linemen: Cayden Romero Cayden Romero 6'5" | 320 lbs | OL Rio Rancho | 2022 State NM (Rio Rancho); Justin Gonzales Justin Gonzales 6'3" | 265 lbs | OL Cibola | 2022 State NM (Cibola); Jonathan Audette (Alamogordo); Royce Paulk Royce Paulk 6'5" | OL Las Cruces | 2022 State NM (Las Cruces); John Fahey John Fahey 6'5" | 300 lbs | OL Eldorado | 2022 State NM (Eldorado); Aiden Valdez (Cleveland); Dillon Hein Dillon Hein 6'3" | 190 lbs | OL Las Cruces | 2022 State NM (Las Cruces).
An impressive unit. Romero is committed to New Mexico. Romero, Paulk and John Fahey John Fahey 6'5" | 300 lbs | OL Eldorado | 2022 State NM are all north of 300 pounds. That’s a lot of beef. Hein was the center for the Bulldawgs.
Kicker/Punter: Cristian Holguin (Pojoaque Valley); Connor Lawson (Clovis).
Defensive Line: Kendal Ulmer (Cleveland); Jose Maes (Cleveland); Julian Holland Julian Holland 6'2" | OL Centennial | 2022 State NM (Centennial); Joaquin Medina Joaquin Medina 6'1" | 210 lbs | DL St. Pius X | 2022 State NM (St. Pius X).
Ulmer was an unsung hero for Cleveland as they stormed (pun intended) to the 6A title. He had 33 tackles and 6.5 TFL. Maes had 44 tackles. Holland might have been the best DL in Las Cruces this season. Medina had 88 tackles and 18 TFL for the Sartans.
Inside Linebacker: Hunter Haemker (La Cueva); Ethan Estrada (Centennial); Isaiah Carreon Isaiah Carreon 5'8" | LB Las Cruces | 2022 State NM (Las Cruces); Manny Bustillos Manny Bustillos 5'10" | 180 lbs | LB Clovis | 2022 State NM (Clovis).
Haemker was one of the top defensive players in the state this past season with 760 tackles and 15.0 TFL. He is committed to New Mexico. Bustillos had 100+ tackles and 9.0 TFL for Clovis.
Defensive End/Outside Linebacker: Deven Dyer (La Cueva); Braden Mignard (Portales); Kavin Colebrook Kavin Colebrook 5'8" | 160 lbs | LB Farmington | 2022 State NM (Farmington); Aldo Argott Aldo Argott 5'11" | 180 lbs | LB Hobbs | 2022 State NM (Hobbs).
With 100+ tackles and 16.0 TFL , Dyer was a major reason La Cueva had one of the top defensive front sevens in the state this season. Argott collected 94 tackles in 10 games.
Secondary: Collis Bousliman (La Cueva); Chris Fox (Rio Rancho); Luis Pando (Artesia); Tayten Hilliard Tayten Hilliard 6'0" | 175 lbs | WR Lovington | 2022 State NM (Lovington); Eli Ogas (Las Cruces); Richard Madrid Richard Madrid 5'8" | DB Las Cruces | 2022 State NM (Las Cruces).
What can’t Tayten Hilliard Tayten Hilliard 6'0" | 175 lbs | WR Lovington | 2022 State NM not do? He’s an exemplary two-way player for the Class 4A champion Wildcats. He made 103 tackles on defense. Ogas plays both ways as well, lining up at RB and DB for the Bulldawgs. Madrid is an excellent WR and DB too.
Wild Cards: Max Gillert (Cleveland); Devin Rice Devin Rice 5'9" | 160 lbs | RB Rio Rancho | 2022 State NM (Rio Rancho).
