PRZPA: William Penn Bearcats Deliver Coach Kyle His First Win

For William Penn football, Friday night was about much more than a win. It was the beginning of something new. In his first season leading his alma mater, Coach Bud Kyle guided the William Penn Bearcats to their first victory of the 2026 season, defeating Hempfield 32-21 on the road.

For Kyle, the victory carried an added level of significance. A former William Penn player who graduated in 2005, Kyle returned to York after previously leading Eastern York, taking over a program that had undergone a significant coaching transition during the offseason. The Bearcats opened the season with a difficult 40-19 loss to Harrisburg, but rather than allowing the result to define the direction of the season, William Penn responded with resilience.

That response was evident against Hempfield. William Penn entered Friday night looking to establish a new identity under Kyle, and the Bearcats delivered when it mattered most. The 32-point offensive performance, combined with a defense that held Hempfield to 21 points, gave the program its first victory under its new head coach.

[player_tooltip player_id='2375232' first='Brian' last='Hunter'] delivered a game-changing performance in William Penn's victory over Hempfield, coming away with two interceptions. His ability to create turnovers gave the Bearcats' defense crucial momentum and helped shift the game in William Penn's favor. Hunter showed excellent awareness in the secondary, putting himself in position to capitalize when opportunities presented themselves. Creating multiple takeaways in a victory is the type of production that immediately stands out during film review. Hunter's two-interception performance makes him one of the Bearcats' defensive playmakers to watch as the season continues.

[player_tooltip player_id='1568087' first='Malik' last='Cain'] provided a major spark for the Bearcats' offense by finding the end zone twice on the ground against Hempfield. His two rushing touchdowns demonstrated his ability to finish drives and capitalize when William Penn reached scoring territory. Cain's production was particularly important as the Bearcats established themselves offensively in Coach Bud Kyle's first victory. His ability to consistently run with purpose and turn opportunities into points gives William Penn another valuable weapon in the backfield. With two touchdowns already on the Week 2 stat sheet, Cain is a 2027 prospect whose continued production deserves close attention from PRZPA.

Great Week 2 📈 14 carries | 108 yards | 2 TDs | 2 tackles. Taking over the offense requires poise, communication, and the ability to execute within the team's game plan, and Matte answered the challenge on Friday night. His willingness to step into the leadership role provided the Bearcats with stability at one of the most important positions on the field. Film review will be particularly important as Matte continues to gain experience and develop his command of the offense. His performance against Hempfield could be the beginning of an important chapter in his development as a 2027 quarterback prospect.

Week 2 Highlights vs Hempfield. His ability to contribute with the football in his hands gave the Bearcats an additional weapon and forced Hempfield's defense to account for him throughout the night. Vellon's versatility is one of the traits that immediately stands out when evaluating his potential as a 2027 prospect. Whether creating opportunities as a runner, receiver, or returner, his ability to generate yards can change field position and create momentum. Vellon's all-purpose production makes him a player PRZPA scouts should continue tracking as William Penn's season progresses.

Here's week 1 clips vs. Harrisburg Cougars.

3 rec 37 yards, 1 TD
5 rushes for 71 yards@PaFootballNews @AFL_YorkPA @RussellStoner24 @CoachCregger @CoachBL_AFL @PrepRedzone @PAPrepVarsity @Coachkyle246 pic.twitter.com/6NmY7UzAcd
— John D. His performance demonstrated the physicality and competitiveness necessary to create running lanes and give the Bearcats' offense opportunities to stay on schedule. Pancake production is often a strong indicator of an offensive lineman's ability to finish blocks and impose his will at the point of attack. Roberts' work up front helped contribute to an offensive effort that produced 32 points against Hempfield. His physical play makes Roberts an intriguing 2027 offensive line prospect to monitor through the remainder of the season.
