Shannon, Jones Lead Fairfield Central Past Chester

<!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>BLYTHEWOOD |</strong> Fairfield Central receiver [player_tooltip player_id='1816745' first='Ty'Quarius' last='Shannon'] made the spectacular look routine in the Griffins 43-22 victory over Chester Monday night in a game that was finished at Westwood. A transformer caught fire on Friday night, halting the game with just over six minutes remaining in the first quarter.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>It took Shannon (pictured above) and his teammates a while to get going but they scored the final 21 points to win rather handily.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>How did Shannon finish you might ask? The Gardner-Webb commitment finished with four receptions for 151 yards with two touchdowns and one rush for an additional 41 yards.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>But let's talk about those four catches. Three of them were attention grabbers. He first caught a one-handed, 38-yard missile with one hand. He was able to get a foot down as he was falling out of bounds. Think Odell Beckham Jr in his prime.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The next catch was a simple crossing pattern. He caught the pass about 10 yards down field and simply out-raced everyone for a 65-yard TD. He even blew past defenders that had the angle. And he capped his night with a 36-yard, over the shoulder touchdown on the final play of the third quarter.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>“I was just trying to make plays, and it worked out,” Shannon said of his highlight reel catches. “It's fun to play in this offense because everybody is on the same page.”</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Fairfield Central coach Demetrius Davis says he can't understand why Shannon hasn't gotten more attention.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>“I don't know about recruiting anymore but I feel he's one of the top two or three receivers in the state,” Davis said. “I've been saying that since the summer but apparently, I coached college football for 10 years, I can't evaluate talent anymore. I don't understand why jokers aren't knocking his door down.”</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>But Shannon wasn't the only contributor as the Griffins unleashed a three-headed attack. Senior quarterback [player_tooltip player_id='1821811' first='Kamauri' last='Jones'] finished 6-of-9 for 223 yards and two touchdowns with an interception while adding 56 yards rushing on six carries and another touchdown. [player_tooltip player_id='1816746' first='Kenyan' last='Douglas'] added 133 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>Wayne Johnson</strong> capped things off with three carries for 27 yards and a score as well.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Fairfield Central used an offensive line that included [player_tooltip player_id='1824368' first='Marcus' last='Wadlington'] and [player_tooltip player_id='1825253' first='Germayel' last='Murphy'] to finish with 500 yards of offense. The Griffins offense had two turnovers and a turnover on downs, but they never punted.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>“We couldn't stop them and offensively it took us a while to get going,” Davis said. “I'm just happy to get out of here with a win. It was an adverse situation and hats off to the guys and the coaching staff for getting them ready.”</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Defensive ends <strong>Logan Watkins </strong>and <strong>Chris Perry-Jenty</strong> along with safety [player_tooltip player_id='1522453' first='Kaylin' last='Culp'] made it difficult for the Cyclones over the final two quarters.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Chester came out fired up after trailing 6-0 when play was halted on Friday. Two plays after the game restarted, [player_tooltip player_id='1822439' first='Jakobe' last='Starks'] scored from three yards out on fourth down. The Cyclones stopped Fairfield Central at the two-yard line on the next drive and took only four plays to take the lead.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>[player_tooltip player_id='1822434' first='Adam' last='Lutz'] went right up the gut for 75 yards to get Chester out of the shadow of its own goal line. [player_tooltip player_id='1603999' first='Caleb' last='Feaster'] covered the final 13 yards even though he was hit at about the 6-yard line, he kept his legs driving and carried defenders into the end zone.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Feaster and Lutz ended up being the bulk of the Cyclones offense. Feaster battled being shaken up in the second half but still finished with 120 yards on 11 carries. Lutz added 115 yards on 12 attempts. Starks scored two touchdowns. Feaster also had 132 yards on two kickoff returns.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Feaster now has 321 yards on the season.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Feaster and Lutz also played most of the game at linebacker with Starks-Wright also playing cornerback. Fairfield Central likes to use a lot of counter plays and that is one of the strengths of Murphy. He's a lead blocker that comes through the hole with a little bit of a mean streak. <br><br>And while Fairfield Central might be a run-first type of offense, they throw it enough to keep defenses honest. Murphy uses his hands well and usually when he locks in, his defender has very little chance to reach the quarterback. He's a heady player and at 255 pounds, he can do a lot of damage for a Griffins offense that is humming right along in the early portion of the season. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- /wp:acf/evaluation-block -->
