Week 1 of the 2026 IHSA football season featured plenty of offense, but several defenders across Illinois made their presence felt with turnovers, sacks and game-changing plays.

Here are some of the defensive players who caught our attention during the opening weekend.

[player_tooltip player_id='1335357' first='Raheem' last='Floyd'] – East St. Louis – DB

Floyd entered the season as one of the premier defensive backs in Illinois and wasted little time making an impact. The Florida commit came up with one of the biggest defensive plays of the weekend against defending Class 8A champion Mount Carmel, intercepting a pass and taking it 40 yards for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter.

The pick-six helped put the finishing touches on East St. Louis' 42-23 victory and showed Floyd's ability to turn a takeaway into points. Against one of the state's better programs, Floyd stepped up when the Flyers needed a play.

Tom O'Brien – Fremd – LB

O'Brien helped Fremd's defense set the tone in an impressive 20-0 shutout of Lake Zurich. With the Vikings controlling the game defensively, O'Brien scooped up a fumble and returned it 19 yards for a touchdown, allowing the defense to put points on the board as well.

Fremd limited Lake Zurich to only 27 yards of offense during the first half, and O'Brien's ability to capitalize on a turnover was one of the defining plays of the defensive performance.

[player_tooltip player_id='2088825' first='George' last='Kalkounos'] – Fremd – DE

Kalkounos was another major contributor to Fremd's dominant defensive showing against Lake Zurich. Working up front, he was able to generate pressure and finished the night with a sack and a fumble recovery as the Vikings pitched a shutout.

Kalkounos' performance was a good example of production that goes beyond the tackle column. He created disruption at the line of scrimmage and found himself around the football when Fremd forced a turnover.

[player_tooltip player_id='1855882' first='Amari' last='Watson'] – Evanston – DB

Watson provided Evanston with one of the biggest defensive plays of its Week 1 matchup against Phillips. The defensive back read the play, came away with an interception and turned the takeaway into a 50-yard pick-six.

The ability to create turnovers is valuable enough, but defenders who can immediately turn those opportunities into points can change the complexion of a game. Watson showed that type of playmaking ability in the opener.

Connor Fox – Mt. Zion – DB

Fox got involved in the scoring during Mt. Zion's dominant 54-6 victory over Limestone, but his touchdown came from the defensive side of the football.

The Mt. Zion defender intercepted a pass and took it back for a pick-six, adding another big play to a night where the Braves controlled the game from start to finish. Fox's ability to capitalize on the mistake helped turn an already strong defensive effort into a runaway victory.

Colin Fouch – Prospect – DL

Fouch made his impact by getting into the backfield during Prospect's 31-10 victory over Stevenson.

Prospect's defense generated five sacks in the game, and Fouch accounted for two of them himself. That type of production up front immediately stands out, particularly in an opening-week matchup against a quality opponent. Fouch showed an ability to create pressure and finish once he got into the backfield.

Jake Linkowski – St. Edward – DB/QB

Linkowski made one of Week 1's longest defensive scoring plays. During St. Edward's 36-6 victory over Walther Christian, he intercepted a pass and returned it 61 yards for a touchdown.

He also contributed on the offensive side of the ball, putting together an impressive two-way performance to begin the season. Linkowski's ability to impact multiple phases of the game makes him a player worth tracking as the year progresses.

Week 1 of the 2026 IHSA football season featured plenty of offense, but several defenders across Illinois made their presence felt with turnovers, sacks and game-changing plays.
