He has been flipping the field his whole life -- just with a different ball. "I was a soccer player ever since I was little," said Johnson, who plays keeper for Tulsa SC. "About mid-summer last year, I was like ’hey, I’ll kick,’ we lost our starting kicker." Since joining the Broncos’ football team a year-and-a-half ago, Johnson has played a pivotal role for Mustang in two seasons. "It’s a big advantage for us to be able to put the ball down there, make [opposing teams] drive 80 yards every time," Johnson said. Johnson, who holds offers to play soccer at Tulsa and Southern Methodist, plans to play soccer in college, but said he would be open to playing football at the next level, as well. "As of now, soccer is my main goal," Johnson said. "But if an avenue opens, I’m all for it."

Scouting report→ When asked his biggest strength, Johnson said it was his "pure leg power," and that’s pretty on-par. The senior regularly hammers kickoffs of 70-plus yards, sometimes up to 75. He has a big punt leg, too, and can send long-hanging, turnover punts to strategically deter opposing offenses, as he did two Friday’s ago against Norman North with a 50-yard and 40-yard punt. Considering where he is now, Johnson could play scholarship as a kickoff specialist and punter with the potential to play low-major or better as a walk-on, perhaps better.

Tyler Cowan | Union ’22

5’7" K/P

Not committed

[caption id="attachment_211487" align="alignright" width="240"] Photo: Union High School[/caption]

Best skill: inside 40

Favorite pro: Pat McAfee

Cowan knocked through a go-ahead 20-yard field goal from the right hash as the clock expired on Union’s 10-7 overtime victory against Owasso on week four. Owasso had missed a field goal on the previous drive. Cowan said he had a feeling all along it would come down to his boot. "Once I saw the Owasso kicker miss his kick in overtime," said Cowan, "I just knew I was gonna get another chance for a field goal so I was ready to go." The senior set up, took his aim, and knocked it through in high pressure snap-hold-kick situation to game it for the 3-1 Union football team. Cowan said his best skill is short-to-mid-range accuracy, where the senior has been money from inside 40. "I’m pretty accurate with those," Cowan said. Cowan said his favorite all-time pro is former Colts punter Pat McAfee, who handled kickoffs and some long field goals for Indianapolis from 2009-2016. https://twitter.com/union_athletics/status/1441599901024935936?s=21 Other standouts

Bristow’s Ryder Goodwin iced a 47-yard go-ahead field goal that lifted the Pirates to a 3-0 win against Wagoner, marking Wagoner’s first shutout loss in over a decade. His coach, Brett Jones, told the Tulsa World after the game it was miraculous that Goodwin made a kick "honestly out of his range."

Catoosa’s Fute Yang converted on a 24-yard kick as time expired to beat Skiatook 9-7 last week. The week before, Yang hit three field goals, including the go-ahead 37-yard kick in the fourth quarter, to lift Catoosa past Claremore for the Indians’ first win since 2019.

Jenks kicker [player_tooltip player_id="160663" first="Max" last="Paskvan"] hit a 49-yard field goal Friday night, his career long, against Broken Arrow.
