Continue ReadingWith six weeks in the books, we have updated our 2023 rankings. As always, there was plenty of movement up and down the rankings. These five players turned it up a notch and made the biggest jumps up the rankings:
Javyn Morales Javyn Morales 5'10" | 155 lbs | RB Goddard | 2023 State NM , Goddard: Morales stormed onto the scene in the sporing when he won the Class 4A 100 meters title at the state meet. He’s converted that blazing speed into production on the football field for Goddard. So far, he’s rushed for 600 yards and accounted for 920 total yards with 9 touchdowns. As a result, Goddard is a legitimate threat to win the Class 5A title, provided Morales recovers from a recent injury that sidelined him for last weekend’s showdown at Los Lunas.
Josh Perry Josh Perry 5'10" | 185 lbs | RB Cleveland | 2023 State NM , Cleveland: After a solid spring, Perry has kicked it up a notch in the fall as the Storm’s No. 1 running back. In 5 games, he has 423 rushing yards (84 yards per game) and a team high 6 touchdowns on the ground. He’s also caught a pair of passes for 62 yards. He’s developing into one of the top RBs in the state and could reach the top of the mountain in 2022.
Alejandro Sapien Alejandro Sapien 5'11" | 155 lbs | QB St. Pius X | 2023 State NM , St. Pius X: Senior Marco Ybarra Marco Ybarra 5'10" | 190 lbs | RB St. Pius X | 2022 State NM is so good at running back for St. Pius X that most folks probably believe the offense revolves entirely around him. Not true. Sapien has already thrown for almost 1,000 yards and 11 TDs in 6 games, making the Sartans a two-dimensional offense. Sapien has emerged as one of the top QBs in Class 4A.
Kenyon Singleton Kenyon Singleton 5'10" | 160 lbs | LB Hobbs | 2022 State NM , Hobbs: We already knew Singleton was pretty good, but this fall as a junior he has emerged as arguably the top 2023 defensive player in the state with 67 tackles in 6 games. His 29 solo tackles are the second highest among the top 12 tacklers in the state overall.
Evan Wysong Evan Wysong 5'10" | 165 lbs | QB Cleveland | 2023 State NM , Cleveland: In the spring, Wysong saw limited action with the varsity, mostly as a wide receiver, and was primarily known as reigning Gatorade Player of the Year Luke Wysong Luke Wysong 5'10" | WR Cleveland | 2021 State NM ’s younger brother. Now he’s the starting quarterback for arguably the No. 1 team in the state and holds an offer from New Mexico, the school Luke signed with. Wysong is a classic dual threat QB with a strong, accurate throwing arm and the speed to burn defenses on the perimeter when he tucks it and runs. In 5 games, he’s accounted for almost 1,000 yards of total offense (637 passing, 264 rushing, 63 receiving).
