Friday Night’s Stars: Dobie vs Dickinson

Dobie went down to Dickinson undefeated, but the well-tested Dickinson Gators came ready to play. Both run-based teams came out and competed, but Dickinson took over to win 48-27. Dobie High School LB Nigel Hill | 6’0 215lbs | Junior Nigel Hill could be seen making plays all over the field Friday night. Hill was very active in the run game. He was able to force a fumble early in the game that help set up his offense in good field position. Hill is a secure tackler, not letting much slip by him. He’s forceful on contact and finishes well. Hill currently has 1 offer from Northern Iowa, but I can see him racking up some more FCS offers with his size and hitting ability.   DB Ryan Saxton | 5’10 170lbs | Senior Ryan Saxton put on a show at safety as he displayed his range all night. Playing as a single high safety, Saxton was able to get over to the sideline in time to make an athletic jumping interception. Saxton has good hands, not just catching the ball, but also shedding off blocks. On kickoff coverage, he popped the blocker, threw his hands, and made the tackle for a minimal gain. Throughout the game, Saxton was very aggressive against the heavy rushing attack and brought runners to the ground.   RB Raynard Hall | 5’10 215lbs | Sophomore The Longhorns' ground and pound attack is led by power back Raynard Hall. Running with tremendous contact balance and power makes Hall an absolute nightmare to bring down. Hall is a strong runner, who on multiple carries was hauling bodies behind him. Seemed like every time he touched the ball it would take at minimum two or three defenders to bring him to the turf. He was able to score on a 21 yarder, as he bounced off would-be tacklers. His skillset makes him good on any down, especially in the red zone.     <img class="alignright wp-image-205096 size-medium" style="font-size: 1rem;" src="https://prephoops-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com/redzone/uploads/2021/09/IMG_1293-e1632267394450-228x300.jpeg" alt="" width="228" height="300" /> Dickinson QB Luke Martin | 6’2 185lbs | Senior The QB sweep was the go-to play for the Gators and their dual-threat QB, Luke Martin. Getting it done with his legs, Martin posted three touchdowns and 233 yards off only 13 carries. Martin has real deal speed and it was on display all night with his 76, 56, and 23-yard rushing touchdowns. Martin is elusive but doesn’t just rely on his athleticism as his vision is clear and he hits his holes fast. Martin thrives on QB Sweeps and zone reads. Since he has command of veer, speed, and read options, the playbook is always fully open.   <img class="wp-image-205094 size-medium alignnone" src="https://prephoops-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com/redzone/uploads/2021/09/IMG_1292-e1632267588768-255x300.jpg" alt="" width="255" height="300" /> LG Josiah Mason | 6’0 300lbs | Senior If you like to see people mauled in the run game, then Josiah Mason is your guy. With good footwork, agility, and power the Dobie defensive line couldn’t find answers. Mason is a bully on the field as he was placing bodies on the ground all night. He locks in on his blocks well and drives with power that is difficult to uphold. Luke Martin and the Dickinson's backs wouldn’t have got it done without Mason and the boys in the trenches. With help from the great blocking up front, the Gators rushed for 338 yards.   ILB | Tyree Woods | 6’2 220lbs | Senior After missing the 2020 campaign, Tyree Woods has been a mad man at inside linebacker in 2021. This kid can hit and you will hear it from the stands. Woods makes quick reads and shoots the gap quickly which allows him to be everywhere on the field to make plays. Woods is excellent moving through traffic in the run game and doesn’t get caught up in the movement of the play. His speed and pursuit angles are huge compliments to his game. With the perfect blend of athleticism and grit, Woods should be on scouts’ radars across the country.   WR Marquis Johnson | 6’0 170lbs |Junior <img class="wp-image-205091 size-medium alignright" src="https://prephoops-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com/redzone/uploads/2021/09/IMG_1291-e1632267808395-224x300.jpg" alt="" width="224" height="300" /> If speed truly does kill, then call this young man John Wick. Marquis Johnson makes plays all over the field. Whether he’s lined up outside, in the slot, or back deep to return a kick, you need to have your eyes open for the speedster. Johnson racked up two scores off his athleticism. With 30 seconds to go in the first half, Johnson took a 100-yard kickoff to the house and also took a jet sweep to the house. His versatility makes him a scout’s delight. Even in this high-powered rushing attack, Johnson shines.
